MhVESSii v I l/vg/vhr Q K0 1 7 i I I MW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIDNEY B. JONES, OF BRIGHTON, ILLINOIS.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,996, dated February 15, 1898.
Application filed J 1115 12 1897. Serial No. 644,167. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I; SIDNEY B. JONES, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Brighton, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed'drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the churn placed in proper position for use. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of thechurn-body, showing the same detached from its frame. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the handle connection. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the churn-bodysupporting bar. Fig. 5 is an end view of the churn-body, showing the same supportedv upon its links. Fig. 6 is a detached view of one of the flanged plates. The present invention has relation to swinging churns; and it consists in the difierent parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs. I
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the base of the frame, which maybe rectangular in form, to which base are attached in any convenient and well-known manner the posts or uprights 2, to which posts or uprights are securely attached in any convenient and well-known manner the cross-bars 3. To the top or upper ends of the uprights 2 are attached the tie-bars 4, said tie-bars being for the purpose of holding the posts or uprights in proper parallel position. To the posts or uprights 2 are pivotally attached the U-shaped swings 5, said swings being so arranged that they will support the churn-body 6, and upon which swingsthe churn-body rests. For the purpose, of assisting in supporting the churn-body and at the same time preventing the swings 5 from becoming accidentally displaced the bar 7 is provided, which bar is located upon the under side of the churn-body, as illustrated in the drawlngs. For the purpose of'lifting the churn-body from its hearings or supports or for any other purpose the bail or handle 8 is provided, which bail or handle is securely attached to the upper portion of the churn-body 6. The
top or upper portion of the churn-body 6 is provided with the opening9, through which the cream is to be passed. The opening 9 is provided with the cover 10, which is placed in proper position to prevent the contents of the churn from splashing out While the churn is in use.; I I
For the purpose of straining the cream when it is placed in the churn-body the strainer 11 may be provided and is located over the opening 9 and is preferably removablyattached, so that it can be removed when the butter is taken from the churn. I
The ends of the churn-body 6 are provided with the conical portions 12, which extend into the churn-body or rather into the cylinder composing the shell of the churn-body. Theseconical ends are for the purpose of better agitating the cream during the time the churn is swung back and forth upon the swingbars 5. I
The bar 7 is provided at one end with the bent or curved portion 13, which bent or curved'portion fits over the flanged plate 14, which flanged plate is securely attached in any convenient and well-known manner to angled portion 15, to which angled portion is connected the bar 16, which bar is provided with the angled portion 17, which angled portion extends upward and between the flanges of the flanged-bar 14. .To the bar 16 is pivotally attached the operating-handle 18.
In use when it is desired to remove the churn-body the thumb-screw 19 is loosened, after which the bar 16 is free to be moved endwise or away from the churn, after which the churn can be lifted out of the U-shaped swing, and when it is desired to connect the churn in an operative position the bar 16 is forced against the flanged plate 14 and clamped by means of the set-screw 19, after which the churn can be swung back and forth by means of the handle 18. If desired, the
bar 7 may be provided with the semicircular notches 20, which receive the lower portion of the swing-bars 5. It will be understood that as the churn-body 6 is swung back and forth the cream will be dashed against the conical ends 12, thereby agitating the cream, which agitation is kept up until the butter contained in the cream is separated therefrom.
It will be understood that the movements of the churn will be easy, and at the same time the swinging movement will thoroughly agitate the cream, and by dashing the cream against the conical ends alternately a rapid separation will be brought about.
For the purpose of draining the buttermilk from the churn the nozzle 21 is provided, which nozzle is provided with an ordinary stopper. For the purpose of holding the churn-body 6 in an upright position when removed from the swinging bars 5 the legs 22 are provided, which legs are soldered or otherwise attached to the churn-body and are located substantially as shown in the draw- 1ngs.
It will be understood that the frame designed for supporting the churn-body may be formed of any desired size, reference being had to the size of the churn-body designed to be used, or, if desired, the frame maybe constructed differently from the one shown without departing from the nature of my invention, as the only object of the frame is to provide a support for the swing rods or bars 5.
For the purpose of providing a means for convexity of the churn cylinder or body 6.
For the purpose of providing a means for moving the bar 16 endwise to either tighten the churn-bodyorloosen the same the slot 19 is formedin said bar, and when the thumbscrew 19 is loosened the bar 16 is free to be moved in either direction desired.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the supporting-frame having pivotally attached thereto the swinging rods 5, the churn-body 6 supported by the rods 5, and provided at its ends with the conical portions 12, the bar 7 having the angled portions 13 and 15, the operating-handle 18 pivotally attached to the bar 16, and the bar 16 adj ustably attached to the angled portion 15 upon the bar 7, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above Ihave hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
