SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,816, dated February 8, 1898.

Be it known that I, ALVIN LON G0 RIOKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scio,

' in the county of Harrison and State of Ohio,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overshoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and ex act description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in overshoes and means for securing the same to a shoe.

The object of the invention is to provide a light and elastic overshoe-sole adapted to be employed in lieu of the ordinary rubber and simple and effective attaching means therefor; and to this end the invention consists in the novel constructions and combinations hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the overshoe; Fig. 2, a crosssection of the same; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the fastening device.

My invention contemplates the provision of a light overshoe designed to cover the sole, heel, and space between the sole and upper of the shoe only, leaving the shoe-upper free and uncovered, so that free ventilation will be afforded when the overshoe is in use and the foot will have ample freedom of movement, thus obviating the objections incident to the ordinary rubber, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the overshoe, which, in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is constructed in the same manner as ordinary rubbers, havingthe sole 2, heel 3, and shank 4, except that the upper projects but a short distance above the sole and forms an edging 5, which terminates at the point of junction of the shank with the heel.

fastening device are confined and concealed by the upper-edging 5 being turned inwardand secured around it, and the heel portion will also in practice be covered to prevent injury to the heelof the shoe by rubbing.

In use the fastening device distends when the overshoe is applied and then contracts so as to fit in the space between the sole and upper of the shoe, while the heel portion of said device engages the heel of the shoe. A transverse spring clamping-plate 8, secured to the shoulders, may also be provided to bear against the inner side or breast of the heel of the shoe to assist in holding the overshoe thereon.

From the above construction it will be seen that I have provided an overshoe which is simple in construction, light, and does not interfere with the motion of the foot in walking or the elasticity of the shoe. This construction of overshoe is particularly desirable for ladies use after rains, where the use of full rubbers for protecting the upper and vamp is unnecessary and only adds weight and is otherwise objectionable, as the upper of the shoe is exposed and is not hidden, drawn, or otherwise disfigured, while the sole and lower portion of the shoe-upper are rendered impervious to moisture.

The overshoe maybe made of rubber, rubber and fabric combined, or of any suitable waterproof material.
