SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters resent No. seams, dated February 1, ieee.
Application led October 8, 1 8 9 7.
` exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.'
' This invention is an improved implement for threading soft-metal pipe, the object of the same being to provide an implement of this character which is simple and` cheap in construction and also possesses theniore im.- portant advantage of being quickly and easily'` operated in forming the threads.
The invention contemplates aconst'ruction and arrangement of parts 4by which the ribbed sWaging-roll can be readily and conveniently removed and another substitutedv to adapt '.the devicefor forming right and left hand i threads as well 'asthreads of ldierent sizes.
To the above ends and to such others as the invention inayper-tainthe same consists,
` primarily, of a lever rcvol ved around the pipe and a swaging-roll carried by the lover, said` sWaging-roll having a spiral rib, together'vvith plug inserted within theend of the pipe.
' The invention further consists in the comblnation of the plughaving a spindle, a lever rotatably mounted on saidfspindle, and a swinging-roll carried by the lever, the swagingroll 'being provided with a spiral. rib that forms the thread upon the pipe.
The invention further consists of a lever. revolved around the pipe, a swagingdoll removably attached to the lever, said roll having a spiral rib, and-meansfor adjusting the roll to and from the pipe, together with a plug fitting Within the end of the pipe.
The invention further consists in. the particular construction and combination of the parts comprising the complete implement, as fully described in thefollowing specification and more specifically set, forth in the appended claims.
-In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pipethreading implement e011-,
serai No. 654.666. on model.)
structed in accordance with my invention,
' thel position of the pipe being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional vievvgl- Fig. 3 is a transverse sec tional view through the handle of the operating-leven... Figlfi is a detail perspective vienr of the swagi'ngroll and carrier therefor.
Referring more particularly to said drawings, `A designates ka plug which is of a size to fit snugly-vvithin a pipe having, a bore of a corresponding size, and extending from this plug is a spindle a, forming a bearing or axle l for the operatingflever hereinafter described, theouter end'of said spindle beingthreaded to receive a cap-nut B, which' limits the movement of 'the lever uponthe spindle ,and also serves `to intimately connect these parts. 'The p1ug`,.witl1its spindle, provides a support for the operating-lever, and the plug proper also serves as a core in the end of the" pipe to prevent said pipe being' crushed injduring the, operation of `forming the threads on the outer side tlziereof.v ,p `Ihesurface of the plug is plain, though, if desiredgit` may be prof vided with longitudlal Seri-ations to insure a better engagementwith the inner side of the pipe. It is'a'p'par'ent that I conteniplate,` supplying the implement with plugs ofjdiiferent l sizes for-use in connection with different sizes of'4 pipes.
The. 'ope rating-'fle'ver4 (designated by the let- 4 ,ter C) presents 'a curved armo,V extending -from a handle c','theflatt.er having a longitudinal `bore through the same, 'while the arm is provided With'an opening through which passes .the spindle a, hereinbefore referred to. v The bore is threaded a suitable distance lbeginningat the outer end-fof 'thev handle c',
the other portion being smooth toyreceive the shank d of a carrier D, presenting a yoke d', Within which is mounted a swaging roll or cylinder F upon an axle e, bearing at its endsin said yoke. Upon the surface of said roll or cylinder is formed a spiral rib f, presenting a rotary die adapted when moved around a pipe to form a thread thereon of a certain size and pitch. To form-a threadof a differentsize, said 'swaging-roll is removed and,V
another substituted either by withdrawing the axle e or the carrier with its roll. shank of the carrier D is provided with a lon` The f ICO . rier.
, the groove permits of a longitudinal feed', this feeding movement being provided for by an adjusting-screw I-I, let into the threaded portion of the bore of the handle and preferably provided with, a milled head. It will be understood that the set-screw G does not engage the shankof the carrier to the extent of interferi ng with the proper feed of the latter during lthe operation of forming a thread, but
merely serves to preveht rotation of said car- It will also be understood that this could be provided for by forming that part of the bore with which the shank of the carrier engages rectangular in shape, with the shank.
tocorrespond.
From the `foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of my improved pipe-threading implement will be readily nn- I therefore declare that I do not `Wish to eon-' derstood, for'after driving the plug A into.
the end of the pipe the lever C is moved along the spindle and the adj listing-screw H turned to bring the svf'aging-roll against the pipe,
embedding the rib therein. The lever being then turned around the pipe will cause 'said sWaging-roll to rotate and impress or rule the thread; Itis apparent thatal swagingroll havinga right-hand thread or rib thereon will form a'lefthand thread on the pipe, and vice versa. Therefore either style of thread can be formed by ins rting the proper swagingroll into' the implement. v
Itis obvious that modifications could be made in the implementand parts thereof in addition to those hereinbefore mentioned, and
ne my protection by patent lto what is "herein precisely shown and deseribed, butdesire to reserve the right to change the construction and arrangement of parts within the spiritA vHaving thus described'myinvention, what claimas, new, and desire toseeure by Letters Patent, isfj 1.. An implement for threading pipe', eoming-roll having a spiral rib thereon; together with a plug or core fitting within the pipe. 'l 2. In an implement for threading pipe, the
combination of a plug or core fitting Within combination of a plug, a spindle extending therefrom, a cap-nut screwed on the end of the spindle, and a lever mounted on the spindle below the nut; together with a swagingroll carried by the lever and provided with a spiral rib, substantially as shown and described.
4. In an implement for threading pipe, the combination of aplug, a spindle extending therefrom, a lever-mounted on the spindle, a carrier detaehably connected to the lever, and means for setting said carrier; together with a swaging-roll mounted Within the carrier and provided with a spiral rib thereon, substantially as shown and for `the purpose set forth. i
5. In animplement for `threading pipe, the
y'combination of a plug, a'spindle extending therefrom, a lever mounted on the spindle, a
carrier having amovementiwithin the lever,
a screw engaging 'a threaded opening in thel lever and bearing against said carrier;'to-
'gather with a s wagingioll mounted within the-carrier and providedwith aspiral rib, substantially as shown and described. 6.v In an implement for threadingpipe, the
' eombination of a. plugfh-aving a spindle, a lever mounted to rotate thereon and presenting a curved arm and' hollow handle, a yoked earifier let into thehollowfhandle at one end thereof, ay screw let i n' to`tl1e other; end of said handle to' bear against ysaid carrier, means for preventinga rotary movementof the ear-- riei',` and a swaging-roll mounted lwithin the carrier and provided with ,spiral rib, sub# i Stant'ially as shownanddeseribed.
In testimony whereof .I affix my `'signatiue in presence of two Iv'fitnesses.
enAs, A. BAILEY.
