P. E! APG AR. DEVICE FOR SLIGING VEGETABLES;
No. 598,236. Patented Feb. 1., 1898.
WITNESSES: &
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER E. APGAR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR SLICING VEGETABLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 598,236, dated February 1, 1898.
Application filed April 21, 189'].
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER E. APGAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Slicing Vegetables; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. a
My invention relates to improvements in devices for slicing vegetables, and relates to that class of devices in which a board or table is provided with one or more cutting-knives arranged in such a manner as to cut or slice the vegetables as they are passed forward and backward over the surface of the board.
My improvement in this class of devices consists in constructing the board in such a manner that the knife can be readily cleaned, adjusted, or removed and in other details of construction, which will be fully set forth hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of adevice constructed in accordance with my invention, looking at the device from the upper side. Fig. 2 is a similar view looking at the under side of the device. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line ocwof Fig. 1 with the board partly folded upon its hinges for the purpose of cleaning the knife, and Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view of the cutting blade or knife.
The bed or tableAis divided into two parts A and A preferably on a diagonal line, as shown in the drawings. These parts are united together by hinges B B, placed upon the under side of bed, each part of said bed being recessed at a point 0, as shown inFig. 2, at an angle which allows the knife D to be inserted at the proper incline in the recessed portion of the part A and provides sufficient clearance for the free passage of the material which has been severed by the knife.
When my device is in use, I prefer to lock the parts A and A together by means of latches E and E, although I do not consider Serial No. 633,150. (No model.)
it in all cases necessary to provide such latches or looking devices, as the pressure brought to bear upon the upper surface of the board when the same is in use will tend to keep the parts in a horizontal line.
The knife D is adj ustably secured to one of the sections of the board by screws 01 and d, which enter slots 01 and d in the knife-blade.
When it is desired to adjust the knife D or remove the material therefrom or the recess between the two portions of the board, the latches E and E are disengaged and the board may be fold ed, as shown in Fig. 8,when it will be seen the working parts can be easily cleansed and the knife readily removed or readjusted.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device of the character specified comprising a two-part hinged board or table pro vided with a knife or cutting edge at the junction of said parts.
2. A device of the character specified comprising a board or table formed of two parts, hinges for uniting said parts together, and a knife or cutting blade adj ustably secured to one of said parts at the point of junction.
3. A device of the character specified comprising a board or table divided diagonally into parts and provided with hinges, a knife or cutting blade adjustably and detachably secured to one of said parts at the point of junction, and a locking device for securing the two parts in a horizontal position.
4. A device of the character specified comprising a board or table, A, formed of portions, A and A the hinges B and B, uniting the same, and a knife or cutting blade, D, interposed between the portions A and A substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PETER E. APGAR.
