IMPROVEMENT IN DIES 'FOR CUTTING AND POINTING WIRE.
SPECIFICATION.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN; I
Be. it known that I, J. C. PLUMER, of Boston, in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved method and device i'or Cutting and Pointing Wire, Nails, &c., and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4, represent plans of each part of the device used in the performance of my improved process or method, showing the cutting edges E and the compressing surfaces C.
Figures 5 and 6 show respectively vertical sections at a a of figs. 1 and 2, and 3 and 4, when each portion of the device is in position to operate with the cutting edges E and compressing surfaces C, opposed.
Figures 7 and 8 represent, respectively, sections at b b of figs. 5 and 5, showing the cutting edges E and compressing surfaces C, opposed.
Figures 9 and 10 represent a wire or bar of metal after having a portion removed from either side through the operationspf the cutting edges as shown in fig. 12. In fig. 9 the wire is out completely through; in fig. 18 it is nearly so.
Figure 11 shows a wire or bar of metal, which after having been subjected to the cutting operation, as shown in figs. 10 and 12, has been submitted to the compressing operation as shown in fig. 13.
Figure 12 represents the operation of the cutting edges E, in removing the portions 10 from the sides of the wire.
Figure 13 represents the operation of the compressing surfaces 0, in compressing the remaining part of the wire after the portions have been removed by the cutting operation.
Figure 14 one portion oil the device made up of separate parts.
The object of my invention is to cut and point wire and other bars of metal for making staples and nails, and for other similar purposes, by a single operation.
My invention consists in an improved apparatus for cutting and pointing the wire and other bars of metal by one and the same operation, by which they are. made sufiiciently pointed to admit of being more easily driven, as well as more correctly, when used in the form of nails or staples, or other similar things to be driven into wood, &c., than when out by any of the common means, and in the device used therefor.
My improved method or process consists of two parts: first, in removing portions from the sides of the wire by the use of cutting edges operating against each other; second, in conjunction with the same in compressing the parts from which the pieces have been out between compressing surfaces operating against each other. The device for the efi'ectuating of my improved process consists, first, inthe cutting edges E; second, in the compressing surfaces C-figs. 1 to 8--opposed to and operating against each other, and may be constructed as shown in figs. 1 and 2, in which the cutting and compressing surfaces are the same in each portionof the device, and the cutting edges of each portion are'designed to come in contact as shown in figs: 5 and 7, or it may be constructed as shown in figs. 3 and 4, in which the cutting edges, E, of one portion are designed to glide within those of the other, as shown in figs. 6 and 8. In either case, the efi'ects arethe same-the removal of the chips by the cutting edges, and the compression of the remaining portion of the wire by the compressing surfacesthe two parts of the process being performed in conjunction.
Each portion of the device may be of a single piece of metal, engraved or swaged into the required form, or may be made up of parts, as shown in fig. 14.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The device substantially as shown in figs. 3 and 4, and for the purpose specified.
J. O. PLUMER.
