V\fI nass es- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T\VILSON, OB PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OB ONE-HALF TO II. E. PASSAVANT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-GOUPLING.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 597 699, dated January 18, 1898. Ayplication filed 0otober 4, 1897. Seria1No. 653,973. (N0 mode1.)
T0 all wlwm it mag concern: 4
Be it known that I, JOHN T.WILS0N a citi-' ze1'1 of the Unied States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny am]. State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following 120 be a f u11, dem, and exact desoription of ehe invention, such as Will enab1e others skilled in the art to whieh 111 appertains to'make and use the same.
My invention relates 00 car-couplings of the dass known as the Master Car-Bui1ders type, in which each dranv-head is provided with a laterallyswinging hook 01 jaw whieh engages With a1ike member of another dmw head, and nach hook has a tongue 01' tailpiece which engages a vertically movable gravisy 1atch o1" piu to secure the hook in looked position, has for its objeet a gmvity latch 01 pin which will prevenb aeeidental uncoupling by the pin j u mpin 595 0r creeping out of engagement with the tongue 01' tailpiece by j01cs or'jars and thus pemnitting uncouplihg of 13he hooks o1 jaws; and it comsist-s in certain improvements in construetion of thela1sch 01 pin whieh will be fu1ly disclosed in the following specification and claims.
In E=he accompanyingdrawings, which form pamb 0f this speeificaion, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal seetion of part of a draw-bar, illustrating the application of my invention, With the hook 01' jaw open 01 out of engagement with the gravity 1atch 01 pin; Fig. 2, a. like view showing the hook elosed and ehe tongue looked by the gravi'y-pin; Fig. 3, a transverse section on 1ine 3 3, Fig. 25 and Fig. 4, a perspective of the gravity-pin.
Reference being had t0 bhe drawings and 'bhe letters thereon, A indicaues ehe head 0f a dra.w-bar; B, the shank or body; C, ehe hook 01 jaw, and D ehe gravity lateh 01 pin, whieh eonstitutes the vital pars of my invention.
The gravity latches 01 pins as usually coustrucoed are liable t0 be displaced by a sudden jolt 01' jar 01 they rise gradually by the m0tion of the tongue and the pressure there of against the pin, producing what is known among trainmen as creeping of nhe pin, by whieh the tqngue of the hook is released and the eoupling severed between two ears. T0
remedy this evi1, I construct he latch 01 pin in two equa1 parts a b, separat-e. vertically, and each parta is provided With a semihead c, having fianges d e 011 opposioe sides, which rest; upon the upper surface of the draw-bar amound the s1ot f in the upper side thereof, a hole g, preferably circular, in the head of ahe part b, and an elongated s1ot h in the elongated hea.d 011 part; a, and 011 the front 0f the pin is an inclined shonlder z'on part Z7 and 7a 011 part a, the shoulder i being below the shonlder k, so that the two shall a1ways be in different planes When the pin is in the draw-bar, thus preventing he two parts 0f the pin being raised simultaneously, and be- 10W the shoulders z k are tenons im, which enter the s10t n in ehe lower Wall of the drambar. The part b is provided Wih an elongated groove 0 an1d uhe parfi a with a projeetion p, Whi0h enters the groove 0 and holds the two parts a b againsl: lateral movement upon each other.
The tongue E of bhe hook C is provided on its man surface with a projection g, which engages first the shoulder 11 on part b an. raises it and then engages shoulder 70 011 part a and mises it, whi1e tahe tongue is being pushed back into the cavity in the heac1 of the draw-bar by the hook of anocher coupling with whieh engagement is being made, and after the tongue has passed the pin anti seated. itself in the cavity of the head the hook is seeurely locked in coupled position by the pin D, engaging the freut surfaee 0f the tongue in the usual manner.
The two parts 0f the gravitypin move loose1y 0ne upon he 0the1, so tha1: a jolt 01 jar or the pressure of the tongue of the hook upon ehe pin will not ca.use boh parts of 1zhe pin t0 rise a1: the same time, and in raising the pin the hook 'r, 01 fing, if used, firstraises the part b anti! the shoulders 11 k eoincide, when a further movement of Ehe hook or ring raises both parts a and b toge'nher until the projeetion q has cleared the pin and the hook O has been uncoupled.
The gravity-pin D is prevented being rawn 01111 of bhe s1ot n by a cotter-pin s in the tenon m 0f pamt b, which engages an elongated s1ot 15 in the tenon Z of part; a and is arrested by the bottom of the draw-beuz
