NAPOLEON B. ZUCCARELLO, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
WOOD-SENDING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,452, dated January 18, 1898.
Application filed August 27, 1897. Serial Nofi49,727, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON B. ZUCCA- RELLO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wood- Bending Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,'and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form. a part of this specification.
' My invention relates to improvements for bending coiiin and casket ends, andh as for its object to bend several ends of diiferent shape at the same time and to provide means for adjustment to difierent thicknesses of lumber.
Reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of my machine with one bending quadrant opened, and Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the machine closed and adjusted to bend differently-shaped ends at the same time.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views of the drawings.
M is the base upon which the machine rests.
A illustrates the fixed body-section, and B the movable body-section, of the machine, the latter having the slots 1) b in the hinged arms Z1 b, one of which is provided with a second hinge b. The arms I) b may be merely extensions of the bod y-section B and adapted to run in V-shaped grooves. The section B is of such length that the extensions b b may pass beyond the section A in their grooves 19".
O O are the quadrant benders, fastened adjustably to the arms G by means of the slotted bars E and nuts F, and the arms G are pivoted to extensions g from the bodies on their respective sides.
The body-section B is secured either parallel or at an angle to the body-section A by means of the locking-nuts a. As used in power-factories the requisite pressure is supplied trom above by rollers, but han d-power may be applied by using a frame and screw of any approved form.
The wood to be bent is placed transversely on the bodies and the quadrant benders brought to bear in a rolling motion, thus forcing the wood to conform to the shape of the body-section with an even strain over the bending surface, and while in that condition the wood is dried by the heat of steam, which is made to enter the section for that purpose.
My machine will bend into difierent shapes simultaneously with equal pressure on all a number of ends. Unlike any other machine, the two bodies may be separated as far as desired. The quadrant benders roll on the wood as they press it, forcing it toward the middle and distributing the strain evenly over the surface.
The advantage which I claim for my machine over others is its ability to bend a set of coffin ends of different sizes simultaneously. To do this work, the body-sections are set at an angle to each other and the wood placed at the points which will give the shapes desired. Different thicknesses of lumber may also be bent at the same time by the use of the adjustment described above.
Having described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a wood-bending machine the combination of a body in two sections, one movable relatively to the other, more or less at one end than at the other, and attachable thereto in any desired position by means of slotted extensions and locking'nuts, with a corresponding pair of benders of reversed shape, adj ustably connected to arms pivoted on the outer sides of their respective bodysections, substantially as shown.
2. In a wood-bending machine having a body in two sections, one fixed to a base and the other movable; extension side pieces hinged to the movable section, one with a single hinge, and the other with two hinges at a suitable distance apart, and both side pieces movable longitudinally in a groove adapted thereto, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I am my signature in presence of two witnesses.
