Be it known that we, HENRY M. BROOK- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York, and SERAPHIN KRIBS, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses for Making Insulators or Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof.
Our invention relates to presses for manufacturing insulators for telegraph-lines and other similar articles, and it is especially adapted for use in the manufacture of 'the particular form of insulator shown in the accompanying drawings, in.whic-h there is a central opening or perforation passing entirely through the insulator and in which the lower end of the insulator is made with a central depression or recess; but our invention is also applicable to the manufacture of other forms of articles.
The object of our invention is to so improve the construction of such presses as to increase their capacity and efficiency, whereby a much larger number of insulators or similar objects can be made within a given time and economy of production thereby secured and whereby the articles can be more easily manipulated, the quality of the article being at the same time maintained or improved.
Our invention consists, first, in the combination of a suitable form of mold having a plurality of recesses of such an outline as to produce the desired form of insulator or other article, a plurality of plungers adapted to form the central aperture in the article, a crosspiece or equivalent reciprocating and carrying device to which the plungers are attached, a plurality of formers having apertures or openings through which the plungers pass, the formers encircling and sliding on the plungers, and a compensating lever pivotally supported on an arm projecting from the crosspiece or on some other part of the reciprocating device, so as to move up and down with the plungers, the ends of which lever are adapted to bear upon or are pivoted to the formers, whereby the plungers are depressed and made to enter the, mold, and the formers have a capacity of motion independently of the plungers, which serves to compensate for any difference in the amount of glass or other material which may have been put into the different recesses of the mold, as a result of which all the articles will be subjected to a uniform pressure and will be perfectly formed. Another feature of this part of our invention is a follower-plate which is connected with the reciprocating device so as to move with it and with the plungers and which is provided with openings through which the plungers pass and in which the formers slide.
Another part of our invention consists in a mold provided with horizontal]y-movable jaws which divide the mold vertically-that is, in a vertical plane-which are suitably recessed and having aholding-plate adapted to fit into the mold and to form the bottom of the recess or recesses and thus to support or hold the articles made in the machine and to enable them to be easily removed with the plate after they have been properly formed; and our invention also consists in the combination of such a mold with the elements stated in the preceding paragraph. This part of our invention also consists in making the mold with two sets of such movable jaws and providing the holding-plate with perforations and also withrecesses or depressions encircling the perforations and adapted to form the bottom of the cavities of the mold.
Another feature of our invention consists in making the plungersof such length and giving them such reciprocating motion as to cause them to pass through the recesses in the mold and through the perforations of the holding-plate.
Our invention also consists of other elements and features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Our invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation view of the press. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, the upper part of the operating devices being omitted. Fig. 3 is a top or plan view of the mold, showing the movable jaws thrown open. Fig. 4 is a top View of the holding-plate.

This crosshead is pivoted to the operating-lever 7 which is connected with one of the supporting-arms of the machine by the pivoted link 8 and which is also provided at its other end with the weight 9.

12 is an arm projecting down from the crosspiece and supporting at its lower end the follower-plate 13. The follower-plate has openings or apertures (shown in Fig. 2) through which the plungers pass and in which the formers 14 slide. The formers are themselves provided with a central aperture or bore, through which the plungers extend, and the formers are adapted to slide upon the plungers and to have a motion independent of the motion of the plungers and also to slide in bearings in the follower-plate 13.
15 is a compensating lever, which is pivoted at its middle point to the supporting-rod 12 and the ends of which are adapted to bear against the top of the formers when the plungers and connected parts are depressed. In the form shown the ends of the lever 15 are not connected with the formers, but are loose therefrom. WVhen the lever 15 is forced down,
. its ends strike or bear againstthe upper ends of the formers and thus force them down. When the plungers and connected parts are raised away from the mold, the follower-plate lifts the formers by bearing against the shoulders on the upper ends of the formers. The ends of this compensating lever may, however, be pivoted in any suitable manner to the formers, and, if desired, these ends may be forked, so as to encircle the plungers 3, or the compensating lever may be supported on one side of the plungers.
The mold is provided with two sets of hori zontally-movable jaws-the upper jaws 16 16 and the lower jaws 17 17. The upper jaws are provided with a plurality of recesses, as shown, and the lower jaws are provided with a plurality of perforations 18 to permit the passage of the lower ends of the plungers. In the form shown the upper jaws also have annular projections or ribs 24 to form corresponding grooves or channels in the article.

20 is the holding-plate, which in the best form of our invention is provided with recesses or depressions 21, encircling the holes or the perforations 22, which are adapted to permit the passage of the lower ends of the plungers. The recesses 21 are so arranged and shaped as to form the lower end of the recesses or cavities of the mold and thus to form the lower end of the insulator or other article. The holding-plate is preferably provided with a handle 23, by means of which it can be conveniently manipulated.
The operation of our press is as follows: The holding-plate 20 is first placed in the mold. Each recess of the mold is then supplied with a quantity of glass or such other material as may be used. The mold is put in proper position under the plungers. The lever 7 is depressed, which forces the plungers into the recesses in the mold, through the material therein, through the perforations in the holding-plate, and through the openings in the lower jaws. The formers descend with the follower-plate until the former in the recess which happens to contain the largest amount of material strikes against the top of the material therein, when the downward motion of this former is stopped. As the supportingrod 12 continues to move down one end of the compensating lever 15 strikes the upper end of the said former, and the lever is thereby tilted until its other end strikes against the other former. The same pressure is thus brought to bear upon both formers and thereby upon the material in both recesses, and both articles are completely and perfectly formed, although the different recesses contain different quantities of material. When the articles have been properly shaped, the lever 7 is relieved from pressure and the plungers and other parts are withdrawn from the moldby the operation of the weight 9 and springs 10. The formers are lifted by the follower-plate, which strikes the shoulders on the upper ends of said formers. If the ends of the compensating lever are pivoted to the formers, as they may be, the formers are lifted by the said lever as well as depressed thereby.
In filling the recesses of such a mold with glass or other material it is impossible to put exactly the same amount in each recess. If no compensating lever were used, the article in one recess would be properly formed, but the other article would be incomplete and imperfect. In our improvement the formers move independently of the plungers, but have a bearing thereon which serves to guide and direct their motion. The lever 15 acts to bear upon both formers with equal pressure and to compensate for any difference in the quantities of material in the different recesses.

The employment of a holding-plate to form the bottom wall or surface of the cavities of the mold enables the articles to be easily removed when finished and also affords a ready and convenient means for making insulators or other articles having a recess or depression in their-lower ends, such as is shown in Fig. 2.-
The perforations in the holding-plate and the lower jaws make it possible to force the plungers entirely through those parts and thus to produce a perfect article having a central hole or opening and at the same time to remove from the mold any of the material that may have been forced down by the plunger into the perforations in the holding-plate Such portions of the material will be forced through these perforations and will drop down to the bottom of the base or standard of the mold. If any material adheres to the walls of the perforations or openings it can be easily removed when the jaws of the mold are opened and the plate removed therefrom.
By making the mold with two sets of movable jaws we are enabled to easily insert and remove the holding plate and operate the mold.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
1. The combination of a mold provided with a plurality of recesses, a plurality of plungers, a cross-piece to which the plungers are attached, a plurality of formers encircling and sliding on the plungers and'a pivoted compensating lever the ends of which are adapted to bear upon the formers, the lever being supported so as to move up and down with the plungers, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a mold provided with a plurality of recesses, a plurality of plungers, a cross-pieceto which the plungers are attached, an arm extending down from said cross-piece, a coinpensating lever pivoted to the arm, and a plurality of formers encircling and sliding 011 the plungers against which the ends of the compensating lever are adapted to bear, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a mold provided with a plurality of recesses, a plurality of plungers, a cross-piece to which the plungers are attached, an arm extending down from said cross-piece, a compensating lever pivoted to the arm, and a plurality of formers encircling and sliding on the plungers against which the ends of the compensating lever are adapted to bear, and means for operating the plungers, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of a mold provided with a plurality of recesses, a plurality of plungers, a reciprocating device carrying the plungers, a follower-plate provided with openings to receive the formers and the plungers, an
arm connected with the reciprocating device and supporting the follower-plate, a compensating lever pivoted to the supporting-arm, and a plurality of formers encircling and sliding on the plungers and sliding in the openings in the follower-plate, the ends of the compensating lever being adapted to bear upon the formers, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of a mold provided with a plurality of recesses, a plurality of plungers, a reciprocating device carrying the plungers, a follower-plate provided with openings to receive the formers and the plungers, an arm connected with the reciprocating device and supporting the follower-plate, a compen sating lever pivoted to the supporting-arm, and a plurality of formers encircling and sliding on the plungers and sliding in the openings in the follower-plate, the ends of the compensating lever being adapted to bear upon the formers, and means for operating the reciprocating device, substantially as set forth. The combination of a mold provided with a plurality of recesses, the plungers 3, 3, the cross-piece 4, the rods 5, 5 connected with and carrying the plungers, the lever 7 connected with the rods 5, 5, the follower-plate 13, the supporting-arm 12, the compensating lever 15, and the formers 14, 14, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination of a mold provided with a plurality of recesses, the plungers 3, 3, the

The combination of a mold provided with a plurality of recesses and having two sets of horizontallymovable jaws dividing the mold vertically, a holding-plate adapted to fit into the mold and to form the bottom of the recesses, and provided with perforations to permit the passage of the plungers, and adapted to be removed from the mold with the molded article, a plurality of plu ngers of sufficient length to pass into or through the perforations in the holding-plate, a reciprocating device carrying the plungers, a follower-plate provided with openings to receive the formers and the plungers, an arm connected with the reciprocating device and supporting the follower-plate, a compensating lever pivoted to the supporting-arm, and a plurality of formers encircling and sliding on the plungers and sliding in the openings in the follower-plate, the ends of the compensating lever being adapted to bear upon the formers, substantially as set forth.

The combination of a mold provided with a plurality of recesses and having two sets of horizontally-movable jaws dividing the mold vertically, a holding-plate adapted to fit into the mold and provided with two recesses or depressions to form the bottom of the cavities of the mold, and adapted to be removed from the mold with the molded article, a plurality of plungers, a reciprocating the mold vertically, a holding-plate adapted to fit into the mold and provided with two recesses or depressions to form the bottom of the cavities of the mold, and provided with perforations through the center of its recesses or depressions to permit the passage of the plungers, and adapted to be removed from the mold with the molded article, a plurality of plungers of sufficient length to pass into or through the perforations in the holdingplate, a reciprocating device carrying the plunge1rs,a follower-plate provided with openingsto receive the formers and the plungers, an arm connected with the reciprocating device and supporting the follower-plate, a compensating lever pivoted to the supporting arm, and a plurality of formers encircling and sliding on the plungers and sliding in the openings in the follower-plate, the ends of the compensating lever being adapted to bear upon the formers, substantially as set forth.

The combination of a mold consisting of the upper jaws, 16, 16, the lower jaws 17, 17, the holding-plate 20, and the handle 23, the plungers 3, 3, the rods 5, 5 connected with and carrying the plungers, the lever 7 connected with the rods 5, 5, the follower-plate 13, the supporting-arm 12, the compensating lever 15, and the formers 14, 14:, substantially as set forth.
