SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent No. 596,434, dated December 28, 1897.
Application filed June 21, 1897.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Seats and Similar Oonstructions, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
The object of the present invention is to' provide an improved car-seat of that class in which the back maybe shifted from one side of the seat to the other for facing in opposite directions, the invention relating especially to an improved construction by which the seatcushion is moved when the back is shifted or changed from one facing direction to another, so as to secure the properlocation and inclination of the seat-cushion in the different positions, and to an improved construction of foot-rest actuated when the seat is shifted, so as to move the foot-rest into proper position for use on the rear side of the seat to which it is applied and carry it out of the way of the occupant of the seat and leave the space under the front of the seat free for baggage.
As a full understanding of the invention can best be given by a description of a construction embodying all the features of the same, such a description will now be given in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and showing all the features of the invention applied to a car-seat in their preferred form, and the features forming the invention will then be specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of the seat, showing the aisle end, the parts inside the frame being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the seat inthe same position. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken inside the frame on the line 3 of Fig. 2, showing in full lines the parts in middle position as the back is being shifted and in dotted lines the position of the parts with the back on the opposite side of the seat from that shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail sections on respectively the lines 4 and 5 of Fi 3. Fig. 6 is a detail section on the line 6 of Fig. 1.

Referring to said drawings, A represents the side frames of the seat, which are shown as the usual metal stands with the wooden arms B secured thereto.
0 is the shiftable back, which operates in the usual manner in seats of the class shown, in which the same side of the back is presented to the occupant in both facing directions of the seat, this back 0 being carried by pairs of back shifting or reversing arms D, pivoted to the opposite ends of the back and to the seat-frame. The seat-cushion E is carried on the seat-support F, which has a sliding movement to carry the seat-cushion into proper position sidewise of the seat and a rocking movement to secure the proper inclinat-ion of the seat-cushion in the different positions of the back. These movements of the seat-support F are secured by mounting the seat-support to slide upon bars G at opposite ends of the seat and pivotally mounting these bars, so as to form a rocker by which the seat-support is rocked for inclination in opposite directions. In the preferred construction shown these bars G- forming the rocker are tied together by a metal tube 10, rigidly connected to the two bars G,'and the rocker is pivotally mounted upon a shaft 11, which extends through the tube 10 and is rigidly secured in the side frames A at opposite ends, a long bearing and firm support for the rocker and seat-support thus being secured, insuring a smooth action and securing an eflicient and durable construction. The bars F at opposite ends of the seat, forming the seat-support, may be mounted on the bars G, forming the rocker, by any suitable sliding connection. As shown, the bars F are provided with slots 1, sliding on the headed pins 2 in the bars G, so that the two bars are held firmly together with a limited sliding movement of'the bars F upon the bars G.
The seat-support F is moved sidewise on the rocker G and rocked with the latter as the 7 back is shifted by the followingmeans: Each of the arms D is provided with an extension at below the pivot 12, by which the arm'is mounted in the side frame A, and one of these extensions at each end of the seat carries a pin 13, which engages a vertical slot formed in the'bar F or, as shown, in a pro ectmg lug 14 thereon, and the ends of each extension on at opposite ends of the seat engage projecting lugs or flanges 15 on the rocker-bars G. By this construction the pins 18, rocking in the slots 14 in bars F at opposite ends of the seat, slide the seat-cushion sidewise as the back is reversed, and the ends of the extensions a, engaging the lugs 15, actuate the rocker G, so as to rock the seat-support F and secure the proper inclination of the seat-cushion. It will be seen also that by the engagement of the pin 13 with the slot 14 and the engagement of the ends of the extensions a with the flanges 15 at opposite sides of the seat the seat-support F and seat-cushion E thereon are held firmly in position by the seatback, so that the seat-cushion can neither rock nor move sidewise independently of the back, but is under the positive control of the back atall times during the shifting of the latter and in the two-use positions of the back.
The construction thus far described is complete in itself and forms a part of the invention independently of the foot-rest, now to be described; but the invention includes also a shiftable foot-rest which is preferably used and forms a part of the invention, in connection with means for operating it when the seat is shifted, as defined by the claims.
The foot-rest is pivoted to rock in opposite directions as the seat is shifted, and in the preferred construction shown it is formed by sleeves 16 at opposite ends of the seat, loosely mounted upon the tube 10, carrying arms 17 of proper form to secure the desired position of the rest-bars h, which are carried at the ends of these arms and rigidly secured thereto, so as to tie together the arms 17 and sleeves 16 at opposite ends of the seat and form a rigid foot-rest construction. The connections for rocking this foot-rest when the back is shifted may be varied; but in the preferred construction shown the arms 17 at opposite ends of the seat are connected by links 18 to the seat-support F at opposite ends of the seat.at the proper point so as to secure the construction (shown in Fig. 1 and in detail in- Fig. 6) catches c are used to lock the back, these catches 0 being carried by levers 19, mounted on supports 20, projecting upwardly from the seat-frame A at the aisle end of the seat and within recesses 21 in the base of the arm 13. These catches c are so positioned that one of them engages the extension at on one of the arms D when .the seat is fully reversed for facing in either direction, so that this arm is held by the catch against movement and the seat-back positively locked in position. These catches are pressed inward through the seat-frame A, so as to engage and hold the arms, by rocking the opposite ends of the levers 19 outwardly, which result is secured by springs 5 on pins 6, which are attached to the levers 19 and eX- tend through openings in the arm B, these pins carrying push-buttons 7 at their outer ends, by which the pins 6 and upper ends of the levers 19 may be pressed inward to release the catches against the tension of springs 5, the push-buttons being shown as playing in pockets 8, set in the arm B.
The operation of the car-seat will be readily understood from the drawings and a brief description.
In reversing the seat from the position shown in Fig. 1 so as to face to the right the catch 0 at the rear of the seat is released by pressing in the push-button 7, and the extension at on arm D thus released, when the seatback can be swung over to the left. As the seat-back is swung over on the arms D the pin 13, playing in slot 1 1 in seat-support F, moves this seat-support to the right in the figures, so as to carry the seat-cushion toward what is to be the front of the seat when the back is fully reversed, and at the same time the extensions ct, engaging the flanges 15 on the rocker-bars G, rock the seat-support F and the seat-cushion, so as to tilt the seatcushion in the opposite direction to that shown in Fig. 1. At the same time the sliding and rocking movement of the seat-support F through the links 18 rocks the foot-rest through links 18 and arms 17, so as to carry the rest-bar b r at the front of the seat upward to the top of the space beneath the seat and out of the way of the occupant of the seat, leaving this space free for baggage, and to carry the restbar I) behind the seat into proper position for use by the occupant of the next rear seat. The position of all the parts at the middle of the reversing movement is shown in full lines in Fig. 3, and the dotted lines in the same figure show the position of the parts with the seat facing in the opposite direction to that shown in Fig. 1.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact form or arrangement of devices in the construction shown, but that many modifications may be made therein without departing from the invention.
What I claim is- 1. The combination with a shiftable seatback, of aseat-cushion mounted to move sidewise and to rock on a fixed pivot, and connections for moving said cushion sidewise and rocking said cushion on said pivot when the back is shifted,substantially as described.
The combination with a shiftable seatback, of a rocker, a seat-oushion mounted to slide on said rocker, and connections for moving said seat-cushion on and with the rocker when the back is shifted, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a shiftable seatback, of a rocker, a seat-support mounted to slide on said rocker, and actuating connections between the back and the seat-support and rocker engaging the seat-support to move it on the rocker and shift the seat-cushion sidewise and engaging the rocker to actuate it fortilting the seat-cushion, substantially as described.
4E. The combination with a shiftable seatback, of a seat-cushion mounted to move sidewise and to rock on a fixed pivot, connections for moving said cushion sidewise and rocking said cushion when the back is shifted, a foot-rest, and connections for shifting said foot-rest when the back is shifted, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a shiftable seatback, of a rocker, a seat-cushion mounted to slide on said rocker, connections for moving said seat-cushion on and with the rocker when the back is shifted, a rocking foot-rest, and
.for moving said cushion sidewise and rocking said cushion when the back is shifted, a rocking foot-rest having rest-bars at the front and rear of the seat, and connections for rocking said foot rest when the back is shifted to raise the rest-bar at the front of the seat and lower the rest-bar at the rear of the seat, substantially as described.
7. The combination with a shiftable seatback, of a rocker, a seat-cushion mounted to slide on said rocker, connectionsfor moving said seat-cushion on and with the rocker when the back is shifted, a rocking foot-rest havin g rest-bars at the front and rear of the seat, and connections for rocking said foot-rest with the seat-cushion to raise the rest-bar at the front of the seat and lower the rest-bar at the rear of the seat when theback is shifted, substantially as described.
8. The combination with a shiftable seatback, of a shiftable seat-cushion, connections between the back and seat-cushion for shifting the latter when the back is shifted, a shiftable foot-rest mounted to rock on a fixed pivot, and connections for shifting the footrest when the back is shifted, substantially as described.
9. The combination with a seat-cushion mounted to rock on a fixed pivot, of a shiftable foot-rest actuated by said seat-cushion, substantially as described.
10. The combination with a seat-cushion mounted to move sidewise and to rock on a fixed pivot, of a rocking foot-rest, and connections between said seat-cushion and foot-rest for actuating the latter, substantially as described.
11. The combination with a shiftable seatcushion, of a shiftable foot-rest, and connections between said seat-cushion and foot-rest for actuating the latter by the cushion, substantially as described. 7
12. The combination with a shiftable seatcushion, of a foot-rest mounted to rock on a fixed pivot, and connections between said seatcushion and foot-rest for actuating the latter by the cushion, substantially as described.
13. The combination with a shiftable seatcushion, of a foot-rest mounted to rock on a fixed pivot and having rest-bars at the front and rear of the seat, and connections between said seat-cushion and foot-rest for actuating the latter by the cushion to raise the rest-bar at the front of the seat and lower the rest-bar at the rear of the seat when the cushion is shifted, substantially as described.
14. In a reversible seat, a seat cushion mounted to slide sidewise of the seat and to rock on a fixed pivot, substantially as described.
15. In a reversible seat, the combination with a rocker, of a seat-cushion carried by said rocker and mounted to slide sidewise thereon, substantially as described. 1
16. The combination with a seat-back, and back-reversing arms, of a rocker, a sliding seat-support on said rocker, and projections on the back-reversing arms engaging said rocker and seat-support to tilt the seat-cushion with the rocker and move it sidewise on the rocker when the back is shifted, substantially as described.
17. The combination with a seat-back, and back-reversing arms, of a rocker, a sliding seat-support on said rocker, and projections on the back-reversing arms engaging said rocker andseat-support to tilt the seat-cushion with the rocker and move it sidewise on the rocker when the back is shifted, a rocking foot-rest, and connections for rocking said foot-rest when the back is shifted, substantially as described. 1
18. The combination with a seat-back, and back-reversing arms, of a rocker, a sliding seat-support on said rocker, and projections on the back-reversing arms engaging said rocker and seat-support to tilt the seat-cushion with the rocker and move it sidewise 011 the rocker when the back is shifted, a footrest mounted to rock on a fixed pivot, and connections for actuating said foot-rest by the rocker, substantially as described.
19. The combination with a seat-backand back-reversing arms, of rocker G, seat-support F mounted to slide on said rocker, and projections a on the arms engaging said seat-support and rocker, substantially as described.
20.' The combination with a seat-back and back-reversing arms, of rocker G, seat-support F mounted to slide on said rocker, projections a on the arms engaging said rocker G at the front and rear of the seat for rocking the same, and a pin-and-slot connection between one of the projections and the seatsupport F for shifting the latter sidewise of the seat when the back is reversed, substantially as described.
21. The combination with a seat-back and back-reversing arms, of rocker G, seat-support F mounted to slide on said rocker, projections a on the arms engaging said rocker G at the front and rear of the seat for rocking the same, a pin-and-slot connection between one of the projections and the seatsupport F for shifting the latter sidewise of the seat when the back is reversed, a rocking foot-rest having rest-bars b, and actuating connections between said foot-rest and the rocker, substantially as described.
22. The combination with a shiftable seatback, of rocker-bars G connected by tube 10, shaft 11 extending through said tube and mounted in the seat-frame, and connections for moving said rocker when the back is shifted, substantially as described.
23. The combination with a shiftable seatback, of rocker-bars Gr connected by tube 10, shaft 11 extending through said tube and mounted in the seat-frame, sliding seat-support F on said bars, connections for moving said rocker when the back is shifted, and a rocking foot-rest mounted on said shaft and actuated by the rocker, substantially as described.-
24. The combination with back 0 and backreversing arms D having projections a, of rocker G engaged by the ends of the projections at the front and rear of the seat, and a sliding seat-supporton said rocker having a slot connection with the projections, substantially as described.
25. The combination with a seat-back and seat-reversing arms, of separate catches for engaging the respective arms to lock the seatback in position when reversed for facing in either direction, levers 19 carrying said catches, and springs acting on said levers to press the catches into position to engage the arms permitting the rocking of the levers to release the catches,substantially as described.
