SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,430, dated December 28, 1897.

Beit known that I, CHARLES E. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlantic Highlands, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scaffolds for Painters or Carpenters; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to improvements in folding scaold-brackets for carpenters, builders, painters, and the like; and the object is to simplify the construction and increase the safety and eciency of the same.

To these ends the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement ofthe same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved folding scaftold-bracket as it appears extended and affixed to a window. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same as it appears when folded. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of one of the clamps. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig; 2.

1 represents a rectangular board, which may be of any suitable dimensions to correspond to the use to which the bracket is to be put and which forms the platform for the workman to stand upon. One end of this platform is provided with two lines of transverse orifices 2 2, arranged parallel with each other to receive the removable clamps 3 3. These clamps consist of a cylindrical shank 4, the lower end of which is provided with a right-angular arm 5, terminating in an integral rectangular plate 6, the face of which is arranged parallel with said shank. The upper end of the shank is formed with a transverse slot 7, in which is pivoted the tongue 8 of the lever 9 on a rivet 10, so that said lever may be arranged parallel with said shank to permit its insertion in the orifices 2, and after it has been inserted the lever may be turned at a right angle to the shank and extend on Serial No. 634,437. (No model.)

11 represents a transverse cleat rigidly fixed to the under side of said platform and to which is secured the inner end of an arm 12 by the hinges 13 13, and the outer end of said arm carries a transverse rod 14, the projecting ends 15 15 of which have bearings in the brackets 16 16, fixed to the under side of the outer end of a rectangular brace-frame 17, and the extreme end of said frame is provided with a cross-brace 18, the end of the frame and the contiguous edge of the brace having a beveled face 19 to correspond to a line drawn at a right angle to the plane of the platform when the brace-frame is extended.

The rear end of the brace-frame is provided with a cross-brace 20, and 21 21 represent brackets in which are journaled the outer ends 22 22 of the rod 23, secured to the inner ends of the parallel bars 25 25. The outer ends of these bars are connected by a crossbrace 26, and their inner parallel edges 27 27 are beveled outwardly to engage the reverselybeveled outer edges 28 28 of the parallel guiderails 29 29, xed to the bottom of the platform. 30 represents a rectangular brace secured to the bottom of the platform at its outer end and which serves as a limit-stop for the bars 25 25, and consequently bears the entire strain of the outer end of the brace-frame 17.

Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. As an improved article of manufacture, a folding scaffold-bracket, comprising the platform 1, provided with the transverse oriices 2 2, the hinged arm 12, the brace-frame 17, pivoted at its forward end to the outer end of said arm, in combination with the parallel bars 25 25 pivoted at its inner end to the outer end of said brace-frame and adapted to engage and slide along the guiderails 29 IOO 29 fixed to said platform, and the clamps 3 3 removabl7 secured in the orifices 2 2, substantially as shown and described.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, a folding scaffold bracket comprising the platform 1, provided with the transverse orifices 2 2, the transverse cleat 11 and the rectangular brace 80, in combination With the arm 12, hinged to said cleat, and the rod 14 fixed in the outer end of said arm and provided With projecting ends 15 15, the braceframe 17 provided With the brackets 16 16 in which the projecting ends 15 15 are journaled, the brackets 21 21 secured to the rear end of said brace-frame, the parallel bars 25 25 provided Witli a cross-brace carrying the rod 23,
