Description

W. J. ELLIS.
COPYING PRESS.
(No Model.)
No. 596,398. Patented Dec. 28,1897.
Inventor.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVALTER J. ELLIS, OF JONESBOROUGH, INDIANA.
COPYING-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,398, dated December 28, 1897.
Application filed April 27, 1 8 9 7.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER. J. ELLIs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jonesborough, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letter-Presses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form. a part of this specification. r
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of copying-press with invention applied thereto and partly broken away, the lever being up. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing position of parts with lever down. Fig. 3 is a section on line 00 m, Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 show perspective views of one of the adjusting-screws and its washer. Fig. 6 is a detail View showing modified form of link.
This invention is designed to provide a letter or copying press of improved character; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the frame of my improved press, which frame is in general similar to those now in use.
B designates a screw-bolt which is threaded throughout its length, except at the lower end portion thereof.
0 is a hole which is made through the upper arm of the frame and which is of a diameter considerably larger than that of the said bolt.
D D designate two adjusting screw-nuts which are threaded onto the bolt B, one above and the other below the arm A, and which are fitted to enter and seat in the counterbored ends a of the hole C. D are washers for the said nuts.
E is the follower of the press, which is of the usual character and which is connected to the lower end portion of the bolt B and also to the end portion of an operating-lever E by means of toggle-links F and G. These links may consist each of a pair of parallel plates, as shown in Fig. 3, or they may consist each of a single plate having forked end portions, as shown in Fig. 6. The lower end Serial No. 634,121. (No model.)
portion of the lever E is bent or crooked, as indicated at E and is connected with the lower end of the bolt 13 by means of the link or links F and with the follower by means of the link or links G. It will be readily seen that when the said lever is moved downwardly the several joints come into such relation to each other as to lock the follower until the lever is raised.
It will be observed that the adj usting-nuts D form means whereby the screw-bolt B may be adjusted vertically to suit the press to any particular size of copying-book, and that when it is once so adjusted it does not have to be disturbed as long as that book or one of the same size is used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a press of the character described, with the frame having the bridge-arm, the stationary rod or bolt adjustably secured in the said arm, and the follower or platen, of the parallel toggle-links connected respectively at one end to the said bolt and to the follower or platen, and the bent togglelever having its outer or convex angle toward the platen and connected to the adjacent ends of said links, the points of connection between said links and the lever being upon opposite sides of a line through the points of connection of the links to the rod or bolt and to the follower or platen, but movable by the operation of the lever into such line, substantially as specified. 1
2. In a letter-press, the combination with the frame, the stationary vertical bolt adjustably secured therein, the follower or platen, a toggle link or links connected to the lower end portion of said bolt, and a similar link or links connected to the said follower or platen, of a lever having a bent end portion to which both links or sets of links are connected at points upon opposite sides of a line passing through the points of connection of said links to. the bolt and to the follower or platen, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER J. ELLIS.
