WARREN e. DAVIS, on RETREAnwIscoNsIN.
BOX-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 596,058, dated December 28, 1897.
Application filed February 5 1897. Serial No. 622,126. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WARREN G. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Retreat, in the county of Vernon and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Case Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in fasteners for crates or cases used for the transportation of eggsand the like.
To this end my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically defined in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents in perspective a view of a crate or case embodying my invention, the lid or cover being shown closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the lid or cover open, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A represents the crate. or case, which is shown as provided with guideways or grooves a at each end thereof, the said grooves 00 being arranged to extend upwardly from about thecenter line of the crate to within a short distance of the top. These guideways or grooves are preferably made in the wood forming the ends of the crate or case and are deepest at their extreme upper ends and in cline downwardly and outwardly to near the lower end of the crate, at which point is an opening I) through the end of the crate, forming in this way a shoulder c at the lower end of each groove.
The cover Bis provided at each end with an end piece I), which overlaps the end of the crate or case A, and to these end pieces are firmly fastened spring-arms D, the lower free ends of which are provided with studs cl to enter the grooves a.
To provide against possible chance of the removal of the studs 01 from engagement with their respective guideways or grooves and to form a rest or support for the lid when it is raised to give access to the inside of the crate, I provide cleats E, arranged transversely across and near the upper end of each groove, upon which the spring-arms D will rest, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and the studs (1 accomplish the double purpose of preventing their removal from the grooves and consequent displacement of the cover by contact with the upper end of the grooves a and of locking the cover securely upon the case by reason of their engagement with the shoulders at the lower end. To raise the lid or cover, it is only necessary to grasp the springs D at their lower ends, at the same time drawing them outwardly, which movement withdraws the studs 61 from contact with the shoulders 0, when a steady upward lift will raise the lid so as to bring the studs of the spring-arms D well up in the grooves a, when the lid may be turned to assume the position clearly shown in Fig. 2.
My invention may be modified in some of its minor points of detail, and I reserve the right to make such as may fairly fall within its spirit and scope.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
A crate or case having grooves in the ends thereof, shoulders at the lower ends of said grooves, transverse cleats near the upper ends of said grooves, a cover provided with end pieces adapted to rest upon said cleats, and a spring-arm having studs that are situated within said grooves, said parts being so arranged that when the studs are in engagement with said shoulders, the end pieces of the cover rest upon said end cleats.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
