CARL ROBERT BRUNO NAUMANN, OF DRESDEN, GERMANY.
MACHINE FOR SCREW-THREADING RODS OR WIRES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,783, dated December 21, 1897.
Application filed June l. 1897. Serial No. 639,043. (No model.)
T .f1/Z whom, t may minerari.
Be it known that I, CARL ROBERT BRUNO NAUMANN, a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at Dresden, Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, manager of the rm styled Nahmaschinenfabrik und Eisengiesserenvormals Seidel 95 Naumann, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Machine for Screw-Threading Rods or Wires, of which the following is a specification. v
My present invention relates to a machine for screw-threading rods or wires, such as cycle-wheel spokes or the like, the spokes or rods being automatically conveyed to a retaining device, in which they are locked in position for screw-threading and from which after being threaded they are released an conducted out of the machine.
Figure l is a front view of the machine; Fig. 2, a plan; Figs. 2a, 2b, and 2, detailsectional views, and Figs. 3 and 4 end elevations, of opposite ends of the machine.
In this machine motion is imparted to the feeding and locking mechanisms through the medium of driving-belts from a main shaft I, which, through the agency of a worm and worm-wheel, drives another shaft II. The continuous motion of this shaft is, by mea-ns of a cam i, a connecting rod or link k, a swinging lever m, and a pawl n and ratchet-wheel o, converted into a step-by-step motion of the shaft III. This shaft III is arranged underneath a spoke or rod holder ce, in the guidingslots of which the spokes or rods cl to be screwthreaded are placed one above the otherr Below the said guiding-slots of the holder a there are provided on the shaft III a'nurnber of notched disks p, in the notches of which, after each of the intermittent movements of the shaft III, the spokes or rods successively take up their position. The spokes or rods thus carried by the notched disks p are retained therein by springs p', extending over about one-fourth of the periphenies of the said disks,
and are in this position conducted downward, whereupon they drop upon inclined plates q, along which they, each in succession, slide down into the retaining or locking device'c, the retaining cheeks or jaws of which are operated from the shaft Il through the eccentric g, acting in conjunction with a lever g', and the eccentrics h and h, coperating with bell-crank levers Z l. After a spoke or'rod has been properly locked in position in this mechanism the screw-threading mechanism in its turn comes into operation.
The cutter-spindle IV, arranged in a line with the spokes or rods when locked in position, as stated,carries two pulleys r r', adapted to revolve thereon. These pulleys, which are rotated in opposite directions by driving-belts, move in close proximity to the bearings of the spindle IV, so that their extent of displacement on the said spindle is limited by its bearings. Between the two driving-pulleys r and r a friction-roller f is mounted on the said spindle IV in a position enabling it to be shifted thereon in a longitudinal direction. A forked lever f', the opposite end of which engages with a cam ZJ on the shaft ILis adapted alternately to press the said friction-roller into contact with either one or the other of the driving-pulleys r r with the result that they are rotated by frictonal contact and that the cutter-spindle IV is rotated alternately in one and the other direction.
Supposing a right-hand screw-thread is rea quired, the cutter-spindle IV being accordingly turned to the right, then a spring s, operated by the cam e on the shaft II, will move the cutter-spindle IV, carried bya slide, forward toward the spoke or rod locked in position in the retaining device, so that the cut',- ter-head secured to the end of the said spin,- dle is passed over the extremity of the spoke or rod and made to cut the required screwthread thereon. Vhen the spindle IV has advanced a sufficient distance for a screwthread of the requisite length to be produced, the cam b, acting through the medium of the lever f', moves the friction-roller f from the pulley serving to affect right-hand rotation to the pulley which produces rotation in the opposite direction, pressing it against the latter, the cutter-spindle being in consequence turned to the left, while owing to the shape of the cam e this spindle recedes, thereby causing the cutter-head to set free the spoke or rod which it has threaded. Under the action of the eccentrics g, h, and h and the leu vers g', Z, and l', respectively, the locking or retaining device cis at this juncture reopened, 'and the finished spoke or rod drops through a slot provided for the purpose in the sup- IOO porting plate or table With a receptacle t arranged underneath, While the next following spoke or rod slides down the inclines q and in its turn takes up its position in the locking or holding device to be threaded as before.
lVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a machine for screw-threading rods or Wires such as cycle-Wheel spokes or the like, the combination of a main shaft, a feeding device connected therewith consisting of a cam provided on the shaft and means for connecting the cam With the feeding-shaft and a pair of notched disks mounted on the latter, a locking and a reversing device consisting of a second cam keyed on the main shaft, a lever and a friction-roller mounted on the cutterspindle and a device for reciprocating the spindle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a machine for screw-threading rods or Wires such as cycle-Wheel spokes or the like, the combination of a main shaft, a feeding device connected therewith consisting of a cam provided on the shaft and means for connecting the cam with the feeding-shaft and a pair of notched disks mounted on the latter, a locking and a reversing device consisting of a second cam keyed on the main shaft, a lever and a friction-roller mounted on the cutterspindle and a device for reciprocating the spindle consisting of a cam and a spring connecting the main shaft With the spindle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL ROBERT BRUN() NAUMANN.
