ACETYLENE-GAS-G EN ERATING LAM P.-

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDRE GOBRON, a citizen of France, residing at 6 Oit dHauteville, Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Generating Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved lamp especially adapted for burning the gas produced automatically by the combination of water with the carbid of calcium.
The object of the first part of my invention .is to supply the water to the generator automatically and in proportion to the require ments of consumption.
The object of the second part of my invention is to provide means for regulating the pressure obtained from the generator and when the maximum pressure is exceeded to deliver the surplus gas to a supplementary burner, which burner'consumes the surplus production until equilibrium of pressure and feed is completely reestablished.
The object of the third part of my invention is to provide means for connecting the water-supply to the generator with the burnertop, by which means the one cannot be acted upon independently of the other.
My invention consists in certain constructions, combinations, .and arrangements of parts hereinafter particularly described and claimed, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-- I Figure l is a vertical section through the central line of the lamp; Fig.2, a similar section on line 00 m of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a horizontal section on line a z of Fig. 1; Fig. 4:, a detail View of the sector-disk, and Fig. 5 a similar View of the top disk.
The body A of the lamp comprises a base A, a stand A and a bowl A consisting of a metal shell, the base A of which contains a cylindrical generator 0, fitted with a screwcover E, from which cover the generator may the lamp, and also a corresponding distance above the open end of a central tube D, which opens at the bottom into the upper end of the generator.
The generator 0 is provided with a removable dome-shaped partition 0 having perfo rations c therein, below which is placed a suitable quantity of carbid of calcium 0., the space 0 above said partition being provided to contain the gas produced in the generator and serves thus as a gasometer. The roof of the gasometer G is padded with felt O or other absorbent material intended to collect the moisture of the gas before it passes to the burner, and the space between the generator and the shell A is also filled with a layer of felt to protect the same. The cap-plate A of the lamp-body carries a chimney-supporting stand A and a burner F is connected by a tube F with the gasometer (3 of the generator, and a branch pipe F leads from the elbow of tube F to the plug or cover F, through which the gas may be allowed to escape directly into the atmosphere whenever it isconsidered necessary.
A tap G is placed in the tube F between the cap-plate A and the burner F and is provided with a wing-handle G, by means of which said burner is controlled from the outside. A supplementary burner-tube K surrounds the tube F and is connected with the cap-plate A by a valve-box I of greater diameter than the tube K, and the lower portion of said box is separated from the capplate of the lamp bya partition I to provide a space 1 which communicates by holes f with the pipe F and by perforations i with the valve-box compartment 1 at the base of the supplemental burner-tube.
A safety-valve S is held down over the perforations z' and within the valve-boX I by a spring J, the pressure of which maybe regulated to hold the said valve upon its seat under ordinary pressures of gas within the generator. If the pressure within'the generator increases sufficiently to lift the valve S, the.
bell and connected at their lower ends with the cover E of the generator to pass through the same, the pipe L being fitted with a cap.

The top of the tube L is provided with a plug Z of felt or other material suitable for intercepting the impurities of the water before its entrance into the passage m, leading to the pipe M, which supplies water to'the generator. The felt plug Z is held upon the end of a rod 02, which passes through the tube L and may be withdrawn therefrom together with'the said plug by removinga cap a from the lower end of said tube when it is desired to clean or renew the said plug when the lamp is not in use.
The tube M is provided atits upperpart-with a conical valve N, which closes the passage m and is connected to tap G by means of a rod N, supporting the valve, having a toothed rack at its upper end and a sector-disk H supported upon the tap-spindle, by means of which the said rod is lifted and the valve is opened when the tap is turned on. The rod and valve may also be operatedindependently of the valve by means of a wing-handleor key H, fitted upon the end of the tap-spindle and preferably formed integral with the sector-disk H, a groove 9 in said spindle, and a set-bolt h on the sleeve of the key H, which latter bears looselyin said groove to allowthej key and sector-disk to turn freely thereonand operate the rack, rod, and valve independently of the tap. The tap is connected with the sector-disk to both operate and be operated by said diskand key by means of diskG, secured to the tap to bear against the face of the sector-disk H and be connected therewith by means of segment-blocks h g, formed upon the adjacent faces of saiddisks} to interlock with each other, and thus cause the tap and valve-rod to be operated con-:
jointly.

The segment-block 7t upon the disk H is quadrant-shaped and the segment-block The block 7L therefore 3 occupies one-quarter and the remaining por tion three-quarters of the surface of the disk.
The space left between the two segmentblocks permits the tap G to be opened and closed when the valve N is closed, but it does not permit the closing of the said tap Whenthe valve N is open. By this arrangement the user is obliged to shut off the deliveryof the water to the generator before closing the tap.
The operation of the lamp is as follows: The-generator having been supplied with carbid of calcium, water is poured into theres ervoir B, through the hole of the screw-plug R, up to a level which does not exceed the height of the tube D, which height is conveniently regulated by any suitable means. \Vhen the water passes through theholest under the bell and reaches the level of the Water in the reservoir B, the lamp is ready to work. The valve N is then opened by turning the key H, the segment-blocks upon the disks G H at the same time opening the tap G. The water traverses the plug l and falls drop by drop, its flow being checked by the porous plug Z, through the pipe M and upon the carbid and combining with the same generates the-acetylene gas, which passes to the gasometer C and from there to the burner F, through the tube F, and through the central tube D to the space above the water-line and beneath the crown-of the bell D, which in conjunction with the space in the upper part of the generator acts as agasometer. If the gas generates too rapidly in the generator, the pressure increases and the gas is compressed beneath the bell D and exerts a pressure upon the surfaceof the water contained therein, thus causing the level of the liquid to fall until it is belowthe nipple dot the pipes, which thus cuts 01f the supply'of water to the generator, and any further accumulation or excessive pressureof gas causes the level of the water to be forced down until the consumption at the burner relieves the pressure. If thepressure of the gas continues-to increase su'fficientlyto overcome the adjusted'pressure upon the valve S, thegas passes through holes f, the tube 'F,.and lifting thesafety-valve S passesthrough thetube K and is burned at Laround the ordinary burner. In this manner the increase of production is compensated 'forby an increaseof consumption.
The generator may be used with other generating material than carbid of calcium and supplied with other-fluid than water in a like manner.
I claim as my invention and desire .to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A gas -'generating lamp comprising a lamp-body reservoir, a generatorat the base thereof, within'the lamp-casing a coverplate :and absorbent pad to which the lampis fitted,
a'bell-gasometer having holes atitsbase secured to the cover-plate and a central tube extending from said plate upwardly within :the gasometer-bell, a water-supply pipecon- :necting the latter with the generator,aburner,
to control "the openings in a supplemental burner -tube and gas-tube, substantially as described.

A gas-generating lamp comprising a com- IIO bined lamp-body, a reservoir'and generator, a bell-gasometer connected to the reservoir and generator, a liquid-supply pipe connecting the middle part of the gasometer, reservoir and generator, and a valve controlling the aperture of said pipe, 'a gas pipe and burner, a tap and a rod connecting said tap and valve, substantially as described.

generator, the bell-gasometer, the pipe connecting said generator and gasometer, a sec- 0nd parallel pipe leading to the bottom of the lamp-reservoir, and communicatin g therewith by a connecting-aperture, a porous plug arranged to cover said aperture, and a rod connected to said plug and passing through said parallel pipe, substantially as described.
