FUSE BLOCK.
(N0 MbdL) 5 y m 5 w 5%? a m w M m W d i \n m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DUNY A. SOHUTT, OF PERU, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE PERU ELECTRIC MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
FUSE-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,585, dated December 14, 1897.
Application filed A ril 16, 1897.
T aZZ whmn, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DUNY A. SOHUTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peru, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented or discov ered a new and useful Improvement in Fuse-Blocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- Figure 1 is a View of my improved fuseblock in side elevation attached in position. Fig. 2 is an under plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line III III of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of the central contact-plug. Fig. 5 is a cross-section taken on the line V V of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a perspective detail view of the fuse. Fig. 7 is a perspective detail view of one of the contactsprings and connections thereto. Fig. 8 is a vertical section of the block at right angles to Fig. 3, the plug being removed and the contact-springs and attachmentsbeing shown in detail. v My invention consists of an improvement in fuse-blocks for primary circuits from a transformer or circuits of varying voltage for stationary motor-work.
Thep'rincipal objects of the invention are to provide a fuse-block which shall be entirely free from dangerous contact, efficient in operation, weatherproof, and provided with a fuse of exceptional length, with means for furnishing a free and copious current of air to the interior.
Referring to the drawings, 2 is a domeshaped body of porcelain or other suitable insulating material, circular in cross-section and rounded at the top. The interior is hollow and is provided at the lower part with an internally-projecting annular flange 3, having opposite openings 4 4 for the insertion of the contact-pins, as shall be hereinafter described. Above the flange 3 is an annular space 5" of a width sufficient to allow for the rotary passage of the contact-pins, the inter- .nal diameter of the space 5 corresponding to the internal diameter of the hollow dome below the flange 3. At oppositely-located points Serial No. 632,439. (No model.)
and midway of the openings 4 4 are located the flat contact-springs 6, made in one piece, secured to a block 7 and provided with open flaring ends 8.
A screw 9 securely holds the spring and block in position, passing through a contactbar 10, provided with a binding-screw 11, through the flange 3, and into the block '7; By this means when a wire 12 is secured by the screw 11 electrical'contact is made with the spring 6.
The center contact-plug 13 is provided with on twardly-extendin g oppositely-located metal pins 14, securely attached to the porcelain plug by screws 15,-the plug being recessed at 16 to facilitate driving of the screws. At their inner ends are secured to the plugs in any convenient manner, so as to insure electrical contact, the fuse -terminals 17, provided with screws 18, and to these terminals the ends of an intervening fuse 19 are attached. The upper portion of the plug is .somewhat reduced in diameter and is re cessed at 20 to receive the fuse. A longitudinal opening 21, running through the center of the plug, furnishes an ample supply of air to keep the fuse cool, and in case of burning out of the fuse, and the groove 20 also aids in supplyingair to the fuse.
It will be noticed that by my improved construction I secure a fuse of considerable length, which is of great advantage in securing the best results.
In operating my device the plug is inserted in the hollow interior of the block, the pins 14 passing through the openings 4in the flange 3 until they strike on the upper side of the space 5. The plug is then turned to the right, as in the manner of making a bayonet-joint, until the ends .of the pins 14 enter between the ends 8 of the springs 77, thereby establishing a circuit from wire 12 to the spring, through pin 14, fuse 19, through fuse to the opposite side, and to another connecting-wire similarly attached at the other side. so in position, the plug is secure against displacement and cannot fall out or become easilydislodged by reason of the insertion of the pin between thesprings and the retaining-flange 3. This feature of security is When 5 2 names blocks, and Iconside-r it a main advantage of my invention. It will be seen that in this manner the contacts are made entirely within the interior and remote from possible danger. The connections for the wires are also underneath and inside the lower surrounding edge of the shell of the block, and all the working parts are thereby securely protected from the weather, while the shape of the body of the box assists in discharging rain or snow.
The block is conveniently held in position by an encircling metal band 22,clamped upon it by a screw 23 and attached to a wall or post by securing-bolts 24. I
The advantages of my invention will be appreciated by those skilled in the art to which it appertains, and While variations may be made in the form or arrangement by the skilled mechanic I desire to include all such variations as within the scope of my invention.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fuse-block comprisinga circular domeshaped hollow body of insulating material, internal annular pin-retaining flanges integral therewith on the opposite inside faces thereof with intervening openings, an annu lar space above the flanges with oppositelylocated contact-springs therein provided with connections for feed-wires and an insertible plug of insulating material provided with oppositely-located contact-pins and a conneeting-fuse, substantially as set forth.
2. A fuseblock consisting of a circular dome-shaped hollow body of insulating material provided With a securing-bracket, internal annular pin-retaining flanges integral therewith on the opposite inside faces thereof with intervening openings, an annular space above the flanges with oppositely-located contact-springs therein midway of the flanges connected to binding-posts mounted on the outer face of the flanges, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a fuse-block consistin g of a circular dome-shaped hollow body of insulating material having internal annular pin-retaining flangesintegral therewith on the opposite inside faces thereof with intervening openings, an annular space above the flanges with oppositely-located contactsprings therein midway of the flanges with feed-wire connections thereto, and a cylindrical plug having a hollow center, contactpins secured thereto at opposite sides and a connecting-fuse joining the contact-pins, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of January, 1897.
