TOILET-PAPER HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,558, dated December 14, 1897.

Application filed June 16, 1897. Serial No. 641,030. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTER H. CLARKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet-Paper Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

' The object of my invention is to provide a holder for roll toilet-paper, from which holder the roll, when once secured in place, cannot as a body be conveniently unauthorizedly removed.

My invention is embraced in a holder comprising a frame having two movable parts to inclose the roll of paper, with devices for locking the said parts when inclosed upon the roll, said locking devices being again accessible only when the roll has been exhausted or greatly reduced in size.

In the annexed drawings, showing an embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on a plane indicated by broken lines 00 50, Fig. 3, the parts being in-position to inclose a roll, and a roll indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a similar sectional View showing the movable bottom turned up against the latch to release the cover. Fig. 3 is a view in front elevation.

Like characters of reference in the difierent views designate corresponding parts.

1 designates the side pieces of the holderframe, and 2 the back piece thereof. The side pieces are preferably substantially circular in form and made solid to prevent access to the latch when the holder is closed.

3 designates the bottom piece, which is pivoted tothe side pieces near their lower forward edges, as indicated at 3*, and said bottom piece has it forward projecting edge serrated or otherwise adapted to sever the free protruding end of the paper when pulled down against it. A lug or projection 3 on one of the side parts 1 of the frame suffices to sustain the bottom plate when lowered in proper horizontal position in the side parts 1 of the frame. The cover or upper movable portion .4 of the holder is pivoted in the side pieces of the holder near the pivots of the bottom plates, as indicated at'4 so that when the bottom plate is down and the top closed there shall remain a slit just sufficiently Wide to permit the free end of the paper to be pulled through. On the upper part of one of the side plates is a lug or projection 4 that limits the closing movement of the lid or cover.

A latch 5, having a hook-shaped end 5 and a projection 5 is pivoted to one of the side plates. The latch-hook is adapted to engage a similarly-formed hook or projection 4", fixed to or forming a part of the lid or cover 4. The latch is provided with a spring 5, that tends to hold the same upward against a stop 5 When the roll has been exhausted or nearly so or the holder is empty, the bottom piece 3 may be turned up with the hand, so as to strike the projection 5 to throw the hook down and out of engagement with the hook 4 on the cover 4, as indicated in Fig. 2, when the said cover may be turned outwardly and a roll placed in the holder.

In order that the locking of the cover 4 shall be automatic, one or both of the ends of the hooks 5 and 4 will be beveled, so that when the cover presses down to close the holder the latch will be forced down until the points of the hooks pass each other, when the spring 5 'will throw the hook of the latch up to engage the hook 4 The device is fastened to the wall by means of screws passed through the back piece of the holder. I

The form of the various parts shown and described may be modified without departing fromthe scope of my invention.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A toilet-paper holder comprising two movable parts adapted to inclose a roll or package of the paper, and a latch to lock one of the said parts to inclose the roll that is accessible only when the holder is empty or the roll therein is reduced in size.

2. A toilet-paper holder comprising side pieces, two movable parts 3 and 4 to inclose a roll pivoted between said side pieces, and

a latch to lock one of said parts operative by the other only when the roll is exhausted or greatly reduced in size.

3. A toilet-paper holder comprising two side pieces, a back piece, a bottom piece pivoted to said side pieces, and a lid or top piece also pivoted to said side pieces, a latch adapted to lock the lid within the side pieces, adapted to be operated by the bottom piece, substantially as described.
