To all whom, it may concern.-
.Be it known that I, FEDOR LOUIS, a subject of the Emperor of Germany,residin g at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Alarm Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to electric alarm devices forsteam-boilers; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which may be made to indicate either the maximum or minimum pressure required; and with this and other objects in View the invention consists in the apparatus constructed and operating as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side view of my improved signal apparatus, part of the construction being shown in section; and Fig. 2, a similar view showing a modification.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents the form of apparatus which I employ for indicating the maximum pressure,while Fig. 2 indicates one form of apparatus for indicating the minimum pressure, and in said drawings the separate parts of my improvement are designated by numerals of reference in each of the views.
In the form of construction shown in Fig. 1 I provide a boiler 5, having the usual steamdrum 6, with which is connected a steam-pipe '7, which may be of any desired length and which is provided with a downwardly-directed loop 8, in the bottom of which is placed mercury or quicksilver, as shown at 9, and the upwardly-directed arm 10 of the loop 8 is provided with a glass tube 11, which connects therewith at 12, and the upper end of which is supported by a metal band 13, above which is a pipe 14:, or the glass tube 11 may be continued or any suitable glass tube may be em ployed.
Connected with the upwardly-directed arm 10 of the loop 8 is a binding post or screw 15, with which is connected a wire 16, which is connected with a battery 17, which is in communication with an alarm device 18 by means of a wire 19, and connecting with said alarm device is another wire 20, which is connected with the metal band 13, which supports the upper end of the glass tube 11.
Mounted in the tube 11 is a float 21, which is connected with a cord 22, which passes over two suitably-supported pulleys 23 and 24- and which is provided at its opposite end with a weight 25.
The weight 25 passes downwardly into a suitable casing 26, in one side of which is a rack-bar '27, and at the opposite side thereof is a scale 28, the numbers of which decrease from the bottom thereof upwardly, and a cor responding scale-board 29 is mounted back of the tube 11, the numbers of which increase from the bottom thereof upwardly.
Mounted in the casing 26 is a verticallymovable spring-supported plunger 30, which is provided with a pivoted lever 31, which is designed to operate in connection with the rack-bar 27, and said plunger is also provided with an arm 32, which projects in a direction opposite to said rack-bar and which is intended to operate in connection with a cranklever 33, which is pivoted at 34 and one arm of which is intended to operate in connection with the pendulum 35 of a clock 36, and the operation of this form of construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
It will be understood that the pressure of the steam within the pipe '7 will raise the mercury in the tube 11, and when said mercury reaches the band 13 the current will be completed through the wires 16, 19, and 20, through the alarm device 18, and said alarm will be operated, and the location of the band 13 may be regulated so as to sound this alarm at any desired pointsay, for instance, at 100. At the same time the float 21 is raised by the mercuryin the pipe 11, and the weight 25 descends and strikes the vertically-movable spring-supported plunger 30, depressing the same, as will be readily understood, and operating the arm 32, which operates the lever 33, one arm of which is thrown outwardly into connection with the pendulum 35 of the IOO clock. This operation, as will be understood, will stop the clock at the same time that the alarm device 18 is operated, and it will also be understood that the plunger 30 must be set at the same degree, as indicated by the scale 28, as that at which the band 13 is set. It will also be understood that this device may be used independently of the clock and with the scale-plate or casing 20, in which event the alarm 18 will alone be operated; but the object of providing the clock and the scale-plate or casing 26 is to provide means for indicating at what time the pressure in the boiler became suflicient to operate the alarm.
The downwardly-directed arm of the loop 8 is also provided with a valve 37, which is located at about the point to which the mercury will rise when the steam-pressure is not 011, and above said valve is a draw-off pipe 38, by means of which the water of condensation may be removed from the pipe 7 and the downwardly-directed arm of the loop 8.
In the construction shown in Fig. 2 I have illustrated that form of an apparatus which is intended to indicate the minimum pressure required, and in this form of construction I also provide the pipe 7, the downwardly-directed loop 8, and the glass tube 11, and back of said tube 11 is the plate 24L.
Adjacent to the loop 8 is mounted a vertical guide or keeper 40, in which is secured a metal block 41, through which passes a cord 42, which passes through the block 41 and is provided at its lower end with a verticallymovable weight 13. The cord 42 is passed over the pulleys 23 and 24:, and the opposite end thereof is provided with the float 21, which rests on the mercury 9 in the upwardlydirected arm 10 of the loop 8 and which is adapted to move in said loop or arm and the tube 11.
Connected with the metal block 41 is a wire or conductor 44, which connects with the alarm 18, and I also provide a battery 45, which is in connection with the alarm 18 by a wire 45 and with the vertically-movable weight 43 by another wire 46, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement.
Suppose that the minimum amount of pressure required or desired were twenty pounds. IVhen the mercury in the tube 11 falls to this point, the vertically-movable weight 43 will strike the block 41 and the circuit will be completed through the battery and the alarm device and the alarm device will be operated.
This apparatus is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it will be apparent that various changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The hereindesc ribcd signal apparatus for steam-boilers, said apparatus consisting of a steam-pipe which is connected with said boiler, and provided with a downwardly-directed loop or bend in which is placed quicksilver or similar material, a vertically-movable float suspended in the upwardly-directed arm of said loop or bend by means of a cord or similar device which passes over pulleys and to the end of which is secured a weight which moves in a vertical guide or casing, an electrical alarm device, a battery in connection therewith, and devices which are adapted to be operated by said weight for closing an open circuit in which said battery and said alarm device are placed, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a steam-boiler, of a steam-pipe which is connected with the drum thereof, and provided with a downwardly-directed loop or bend in the bottom of which is placed mercury, the upwardly-directed arm of said loop or bend being provided with a float which is suspended therein by a cord or other device which is passed over pulleys, and the opposite end of which is provided with a weight which moves in a vertical guide or casing, and devices which are adapted to be operated by said weight for closing an open circuit in which said electrical alarm device and said battery are placed, and a clock which is supported adjacent to said device, and which is adapted to be stopped thereby, substantially as shown and described.
