- ATTORNEY INVENTO way/M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLEMENT J. RESTEIN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,340, dated December 14, 1897.
Application filed March 26, 1897. Serial No. 629,310. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, CLEMENT J. REsTnIN, a
Athe features named being hereinafter set forth.
Figure l represents a side elevation of a piece of packing embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents an end View thereof. Fig. 3 represents the manner of applying the invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the iigures.
Referring to the drawings, A and B designate two sections which are triangular in cross-section and contact at their hypotenuse.
C designates a cushion which rests upon the section A and is inclosed by the covering D, of iibrous material, preferably braided, said material also extending around the outer sides of the sections A and B as a sack or casing.
The cushion C is formed of asbestos, and the sections A and B are formed, say, each of canvas and rubber, the grade of one being different from the other, so that there is a difference in the compactness or density of the sections, and as a result when the sections are subjected to pressure their contiguous surfaces will easily slide or move one on the other as they are expanded, and there is a regularity of said motion, thus avoiding buckling or improper bulging of the sections when in use, which occurs when each of the sec tions Aand B are made of soft or hard material of relatively the same density.
The asbestos provides a iirm cushion, which will be sufficiently yielding in its nature and does not require the severe pressure of the gland thereon, as is the case with material for cushions heretofore in use, and, furthermore, the cushion will not burn or crumble While subjected to friction thereon, a feature of great importance in articles of that class.
I am aware that it is not new to form pack ing of triangular-shaped sections adapted to move on each other, and disclaim the same; but in my case I make such sections of different densities or compactness, so that one of them will offer less resistance, permitting the other along its entire contact-face to move uniformly thereon, so as to prevent any buckling or wrinkling of the contact-faces.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. yA packing, composed of sections having their contiguous faces ladapted to slide on each other, said sections being composed of materials having different densities, whereby buckling and improper bulging of the sections are prevented, in combination with a cushion of yielding, non-combustible material, said cushion and sections being inclosed in a casing of fibrous material.
2. A packing consisting of the angular sections A and B, said sections being composed of materials of different densities, and a cushion of asbestos located adjacent one of said sections, said cushion and sections being in closed in a casing of fibrous material.
CLEMENT J. RESTEIN.
