NON-CONDUCTlNG COVERING FOR PIPES.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK J. HUNLETH, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Iin provement in Non-Conducting Coverings for Pipes, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This is a covering in which a mat of mineral wool is inclosed in a sheet of elastic material. Its purpose is to check the passage of heat outward from a hot pipe or inward to a cold pipe or other thing.
The features of novelty will be set forth in the claim.
Figure I is a perspective view of the device in cylindrical form. Fig. II is a transverse section of the device before it is bent into a cylindrical form.
1 is a mat of mineral wool, asbestos or other similar substance, containing a large quantity of imprisoned air. The meeting edges of the mat are fitted together with a V joint having a re-entering angle at 3 and projecting angle or rib at 45 forming a locking joint to prevent the passage of air or other gases at that place. The V-joint extends from side to side of the mat.
The mat 1 is first inclosed in a sheet- 2 of paper or other flexible material, both of whose edges 5 and 6 lap past the edge of the mat, and when placed around the pipe or otherobject both of the laps 5 and 6 extend past the V joint 3, 4, circumferentially and serve to 3 5 seal the joint completely as well as hold the parts in proper position. Over the whole I prefer to place a wrapper 7 of canvas or other suitable material.
It will be seen that the rib and groove or V 40 joint 3, a will insure the edges being brought together in the proper position as the device or covering is bent around the pipe and that the lap 5 will serve to prevent the inner corner of the edge3 becoming inserted between the pipe and the other edge 4 of the covering. The wide lap 6 serves to hold down the narrow lap 5 and to make the joint more perfect.
I claim as my invention- A non-conducting covering composed of a mat 1 provided at one end with a projecting angle or rib and a re-entering angle at its other end, and in which the projecting angle fits, and an elastic covering 2 inciosin'g the said mat and having its ends lap past the meeting edges of the mat, substantially as shown and described.
