UNTTED STATns PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES S. CAMPBELL AND JAMES V. SHIELDS, OF PITTSBURG,
PENNSYLVANIA.
HOSE-BRIDGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,144, dated December 7, 1897.
Application filed March 25, 1897.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J AMES S. CAMPBELL and J AMES V. SHIELDS, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Bridges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hose-bridges, and has for its object to construct a hose-bridge that may be readily secured to the track of streetrailways and the like in order to permit the cars to pass over the hose, which may be laid across the track without injury to same and to this end the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The invention further aims to construct a hose-bridge of this nature that will be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, effectual in its operation, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and in describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved hose-bridge in position on the rail and showing the connecting-braces broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the bridges on each rail, said view being taken on a line coinciding with X X 011 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view taken on the line Y Y of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings by reference-figures, 1 denotes the bridge proper, which is provided with a central cut-away portion 2 on its underneath face, said bridge being tapered from its center toward each end and having located at each side of the cut-away portion on its inner face down- Serial No. 629,155. (No model.)
wardly-projecting lugs 3, forming standards which are. adapted to rest on the flange 4 of the rail, while the underneath face of the bridge rests upon the tread 5 of the rail. The inner face of the bridge is thus in perfect alinement with the inner edge of the tread of the rail, so that the car will pass easily over the bridge. The bridges of each rail are secured together by means of connecting-braces 6, provided with T ends 7, apertured to receive fastening-bolts S, which are secured by nuts 9, said bolts also receiving a clamp 10, which engages the tread portion of the rail and assists in holding the bridge rigid and in firm engagement with the rail. It will be observed that by this construction and arrangement of parts the bridge may be readily placed in position on the rails and quickly secured, the hose being passed through the cut-away portions, thus permitting the car to ride over the same with perfect safety to the hose.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of our invention.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hose-bridge consisting of the bridge proper, having an inclined face tapering from the center to each end, said bridge provided with a cut-away portion to receive the hose, supporting-standards for said bridge, combined with the connecting-braces having T ends to receive the fastening-bolts and clamps carried by said bolts to engage the rail, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES S. CAMPBELL. JAMES W. SHIELDS.
