FIRE EXTINGUISHING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,115, dated December 7, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH O. BANNING, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Fire-Extinguishing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a receptacle 0r storage-cylinder for fire-extinguishing solutions and to improved provision for handling and operating the same; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a pump which will not siphon and the handle of which may be locked when not in use; second, to provide such pump with ball-valves of metal, so as to secure more perfect continuity of ejecting power when in operation; third, to provide for most securely and expeditiously locking the pump-head in position in the cylinder; fourth, to provide the cylinder cover or top with a removable liquid-tight cap which may be quickly adjusted or detached. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevational view of the cylinder; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the entire apparatus; Fig. 3, a view of the top of apparatus; Fig. 4, a view of the under side of cylinder-cover.

In Fig. 1, A is the head of pump; B, the hub of handle where it engages by threaded connection with the piston-cylinder; O, the chain or link for locking the handle of pump when not in use, and O the ring, which may be of rubber, metal, or other material.
D is the collar or ring, to which the chain or link is attached for locking the pump.
E is the spout of pump-head, where hose is attached.
F is the handle 3 G, the cover of cylinder; H, the cylinder, and I the base or bottom flange.
In Fig. 2, A is the pump-head; A, the cylinder-cap; E, the outlet or spout of pump; F, the handle of pump; G, the cover or top of cylinder; G, the rim of cover; H, the cylinder, and I thebase or flange. The metal ballvalves are shown at J J, a vertical section of the pump being also here given. The cylinder-cap A is provided with an orifice at O. This serves as a socket for the hose-nozzle when not in use and as a vent when the apparatus is in operation.
The outer cylinder or chamber of pump is shown at P. This pipe is pierced by a hole at V, which prevents the hose from siphoning the cylinder if left depending from the pumpspout. The piston or inner cylinder of pump is shown at P.
Both the pump-head and the cylinder-cap (shown at A and A) are secured against leakage by means of a channel-joint, in which is bedded a rubber ring. This device is shown at R in Fig. 2. The pump-head and cylindercap are locked and drawn up to a close contact by means of lapping-lugs, which bear immediately on sloping rims which border the under sides of openings in the cylindertop. This rim is shown at bin Fig. 2 and at t" in Fig. 4. In the cylinder-top each opening is encircled by a rim, thus forming a countersunk seat for the fixtures. The lugs L are for the purpose of screwing the cap up to tight contact.
In the top View of the apparatus shown in Fig. 3 A is the pump-head; A, the cylindercap; F, the pump-handle; F, the handle of cylinder; G, the cover or top of cylinder; I, the bottom flange; L, the lugs on cap, and O the orifice. The purpose of the bottom or base flange is to provide a means for holding the cylinder firmly down with the feet when working the pump.
The locking device shown in vertical section in Fig. 2 is shown in plan in Fig. 4, in which A is the pump-head; A, the cylindercap; G, the under side of cylinder-top; G, the outer rim of the same; K, the slot to openings for the passage of the lugs e e e e. The rims of both pump-head and cylinder-cap are shown at 11 and the sloping hub or rim of openings at 2". A small spur s prevents turning the fixture in the wrong direction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A retaining vessel provided with a cap having an aperture therein, the rim surrounding composed of an outer cylinder having a hole the aperture extending downward and ternear its top and an inner piston-cylinder, all minating in two spiral extensions, a pump arranged and located as set forth.
