To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. A. KNIGHT, of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Extinguishers; and Ihereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvementin the cla-ss of fire-extinguishers in which a fire-extinguishing liquid is placed under great gas-pressure and allowed to escape in a fine stream with such force that the liquid can be thrown a considerable distance on the fire. I
The object of this invention is to so construct the receptacle and so control the liquid that a stream of the liquid can be readily directed on an incipient fire to extinguish the same and the gas-pressure maintained for an indefinite time.
The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the device and the conibination of the parts, as will be Inore fully set forth hereinafter.

The gas used in this class of hre-extinguishers is usually carbonio-acid gas, and the Huid usually contains matter held in solution or suspension which evolves carbonio-acid gas when thrown on the fire. these constituents, I provide a chamber in which the fluid is allowed to expand and mix before the saine is discharged.

It is provided with the valve-seat g and above the valve-seat with the enlarged annular groove t, from one sideof which the discharge-opening extends through the nozzle 7c. The upper end of the valve-casing f is provided with the externally-screw-threaded packing-cup Z, to which the follower m is secured by screwthreaded engagement and by which the packing in the cup is compressed. The follower m is provided with the cup 'n and the screw 0. The nut 19, which is provided with the arms q q, has an annular groove into which the end of the screw 0 enters. the upper part of which is screw-threaded and the upper end provided with the arms t t.
The operation of the valve is as follows: When the extinguisher is charged, the turning of the handlestttoward the left or against the sun draws the valve r against the seat g.
When now the arms q q and with them the nut p are turned to the right or with the sun, Ithe valve and valve-stem are raised without turning and the valve is forced firmly against the valveseat. When the valve is to be opened, it may be done wholly by turning the nut p and handles q q in the reverse direction, thus moving the valve o ff from its seat without turning the same, or the valve may be released from the close Contact with the valve-seat by means of the nut p and arms q q, and then lowered by turning the valve and valve-stem by means of the arms t t. The valve r, Valve-stem s, and the nut p may be turned together while the valve is held to its seat, and thus the valve may be ground on the' seat while the extinguisher is charged.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a portable hand fire-extinguisher, the combination with the cylinder ce, the end caps b and b', the suspension-ring c and the central tube d, of the cap c secured in the tube d and screw-threaded at its upper end, the valve-case f secured to the cap e, the valveseat g, the annular groove h, the nozzle 7s connecting with the annular groove, a valve interposed between the valve-seat and the internal pressure, and the means, substantially as described, for operating the valve, as described.
2. The combination in a portable iire-eX- tinguisher with the tube d, of a mixing-chamber consisting of the cap e having a small opening in its closed end, said cap being secured in the upper end of the tube oZ, the valve-case f, secured to the open end of the cap e, the valve-seat r, the annular groove 7L, the nozzle 7i: the opening in which connects with the annular groove h, the packing-cupl at the upper end of the valve-case f, the follower m for compressing the packing, the cup n on the upper part of the follower, the locknut p having an annular groove and provided with the arms q q, the screw 0 for connecting the lock-nut 19 with the cup n, the valve 'u located in the cap e, the valve-stein s provided at its upper end with the arms t, t, whereby the valve may be operated and locked and the discharge of the liquid controlled, as described.
