TAKE-UP MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,104, dated December 7, 1897.
Application filed July 24,1897. Serial No. 645,789- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: nular flange 2 and the eccentric opening 5", Be it known that we, GEORGE F. .I-IUTCH- within which extends loosely a part of what INS and W'ILLIAM D. THOMPSON, citizens of we term the combination gear-rim 6,which the United States, residing at \Voroester, in has internal gear-teeth 6 thereon to mesh the county of \Vorcester and State of Massawith the external gear-teeth 4 on the flanged chusetts, have invented certain new and usegear 2. The number of the teeth 6 is greater ful Improvements in Take-Up Mechanism, of than the number of the teeth at. The gearwhich the following is a specification. rim 6 also has external teeth 6 thereon to Our invention relates to a take-up mechmesh with the internal teeth 7 on the inner IO anism which is to be used more particularly edge of the pulley or roll 7, loosely mounted in connection with narrow-wear looms. In on the shaft 1. The number of the teeth 6" this class of looms a series of take-up rolls is less than the number of teeth 7. are mounted on a common take-up shaft and The combination gear-rim 6 turns freely revolve with said shaft to take up or wind the within the eccentric opening 5 in the hand- 15 fabric as it is woven, and each take-up roll wheel 5, and the gear-teeth 6 and 6 on said maybe revolved in either direction independgear-rim 6 are concentric with the portion of ently of the take-up shaft in case of a shuttlesaid gear-rim which extends within said openthread breaking or for any other reason. ing 5.
The object of our invention is to make an The eccentricity of the opening 5 in the 20 improved take-up mechanism of the desoriphand-wheel 5 is equal to the length of a tooth tion shown and described in our application on the combination gear-rim 0 plus any adfor Letters Patent of the United States, filed ditional amount for clearance. (See Fig. 1.) Fig. 3 is a nection with the drawings, and is as follows: view of the hand-wheel detached looking in When the shaft 1 revolves in the ordinary 5 the direction of arrow a, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a operation of the loom, the flanged gear 2, fast section on line 0 c, Fig. 2, looking in the dithereon, will revolve with it and will carry rection of arrow 1), same figure; and Fig. 5 the roll or pulley 7 and the hand-wheel 5 corresponds to Fig. 4, only the hand-wheel is through the combination gear-rim 6, extendremoved and not shown in section in this ing loosely within the eccentricopening 5 4o figure. in the said hand-Wheel 5, as above stated.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 is a por- When it is desired to cause the roll 7 to turn tion of a driven shaft, which may be the takein either direction independently of the shaft up shaft of a narrow-wear loom. 1, said shaft continuing to revolve, the hand- 2 is a flanged gear secured on the shaft 1 Wheel 5is turned in one direction or the other,
45 by a set-screw 3. The flanged gear 2 has according to whether it is necessary to turn gear-teeth 4 extending around its periphery, the roll 7 forward or back. When the handand also has the annular flange 2 extending wheel 5 is revolved in either direction, said out therefrom, and on said flange 2 is mounthandwheel being loosely mounted on the ed to turn loosely the hand-wheel 5, which flange 2 of the gear 2, fast on the shaft 1, as
50 has the circular recess 5 to fit onto said anabove stated, the eccentric opening 5 in said hand-wheel 5, into which the concentric edge of the gear-rim 6 loosely extends, causes said gear-rim 6 to move, so that the internal teeth 6 thereon will be engaged continually with the teeth 4 on the gear 2 through any movement of the eccentric opening 5 in the handwheel 5, and it will be seen that by one revolution of the hand-wheel 5 all the teeth 4 on the gear 2 will have been engaged by the teeth 6 on the gear-rim 6, and if there are one or more teeth 6' than there are teeth 4 the movement of the gear-rim 6 will be advanced beyond its original position by the difference in number of teeth between teeth 4 and teeth 6'. An operation of a similar nature will take place between the teeth 7 on the pulley or roll 7 and the teeth 6 on the gear-rim 6 during the same revolution of the hand-wheel 5, and there being more teeth 7 than there are 6 they will be advanced or moved forward in the same direction around the teeth 6 as the teeth 6 are advanced around the teeth 4, and the movement of the take-up roll or pulley 7 independently of the shaft 1 for one revolution of the hand-wheel 5 and eccentric opening 5 therein will be equal to the combined advancement of the teeth 6 and 7, above referred to. The continued revolution of the hand-wheel 5 will cause the take-up roll 7 to revolve on the shaft 1 as desired.
The advantages of our take-up mechanism 7 will be readily appreciated by those skilled given to it by the hand-wheel 5, so that there will be no backward or forward movement.
It will be understood that the details of construction of our take-up mechanism may be varied somewhat from what is shown and described, if desired.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A take-up mechanism for looms, &c., consisting of a flanged gear to be secured on a shaft, a pulley or roll to be loosely mounted on a shaft, and having internal gear-teeth on the edge thereof, a gear-rim extending loosely within said teeth, and having external gearteeth to mesh therewith, and internal gearteeth to mesh with the teeth on said flanged gear, and a hand-wheel loosely mounted on said flanged gear, and having an eccentric opening therein to receive the concentric portion of the gear-rim, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a driven shaft, of a flanged gear fast thereon, a pulley or roll loosely mounted on said shaft, and having internal gear-teeth, a gear-rim having external gear-teeth to mesh therewith, and internal gear-teeth to mesh with the teeth on said flanged gear, and a hand wheel loosely mounted on said flanged gear, and having an eccentric opening therein, into which extends -the concentric portion of the gear-rim, and means for holding the several parts in place, substantially as shown and described.
