Be it known that I, ROBERT P. HORNBAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'Washingtom in the county of lVashingt-on and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVringer-Rolls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to wringer-rolls.

Heretofore much trouble has been experienced in using clothes-wringers owing to the fact that the water is liable to rot out the rolls, and more particularly the crank-roll, thereby quickly impairing the efficiency of the device and making it necessary to supply new rolls.

My object is to provide a novel form of roll adapted for use on clothes-wringers which will be of simple and cheap construction, can be quickly and easily applied to or removed from the wringer, and one whichwill be eX- tremely durable and strong.

Having these objects in view, the invention consists of those novel features and combinations of parts appearing more fully hereinafter.

In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is a View of a clothes-wringer equipped with my improved roll; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 3, a view of the left-hand end of the roll, the shaft being shown in section and the washer as broken away; Fig. 4, a sectional view of the right-hand end of the roll, and Fig. 5 an end view of the right-hand end of the roll.

The numeral 1 designates the spindle or shaft. This shaft is provided with an elongated enlarged portion 2 and reduced ends or journals 3 and L1. The left-hand end of the enlarged portion is cut away on opposite sides to provide the flat portions 5 and 6. The other or right-hand end of the enlarged portion is only cut away on one side, as at 7.

The numeral S designates a sleeve which is provided with a key 9, adapted for reception on the flat portion 7, so as to prevent the sleeve from turning. The body of the sleeve snugly iits the enlarged portion of the spindle or shaft. The body of the sleeve is cut away on one side, as at 10, said sleeve heilig provided with an outer collar 1l.

The numeral 12 designates a tube which is grooved longitudinally, as at 13, thereby providing the ribs 14. At 15 there is shown a key which is located on the inside of the tube and is held in position by a screw 15. This key is adapted to slide on the reduced portion 10 of the sleeve and keep the tube from slipping.

There is asecond sleeve 16,which is adapted to snugly fit over the enlarged portion of the spindle, and this sleeve iits snugly within the other end of the tube. At the end of the sleeve there is located a washer 17, provided with an opening 18, having straight sides 19 and 20, which are received on the cut-away portions 5 and G. This washer is securely connected to the sleeve, and by its engagement with the cut-away portion of the spindle it prevents the sleeve from slipping or turning. If desirable, the tube can be secured by fastening devices to the two sleeves.

It will be seen that as the roll is of metal it is practically indestructible, but at the same time well adapted to fill its office. Should, however, a roll become worn through longcontinued usage, it can be removed Whenever desirable and a new one substituted therefor. If desirableya similar roll could be substr tuted for the ordinary upper roll 110W employed in clothes-wringers, although it is not necessary, as the greater part of the wear and action of the boiling water comes on the lower or crank roll.

There are many slight changes which could be resorted to without detracting from the present invention in any manner, and hence it is to be understood that I do not limit inyself to the precise construction herein shown and described, but consider that I am entitled to all such variations as come within the spirit and scope of the invention.
