W IZ'N EESEF- IN/YENID'R:
UNrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATTHEXV TINKER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
HAN D-STAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,005, dated December 7, 1897. Application filed May 24, 1895. Serial No. 550,524. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATTHEW TINKER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Head and Handle for Hand-Stamps, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention has relation to improvements in heads and holders for holding and retaining elastic types suitable for making impressions on surfaces by impact or pressure; and the object is to provide an implement for the purpose named which will take and hold elastic or rubber type and which is so constructed as to be stable, durable, convenient, and cheap.
I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings,where- 1n- Figure 1 is a bottom plan View of a typeholding plate. Fig. 2 is a side View of the head and holder, showing the means for securing the holder to the head. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line as of Fig. 2, showing the interposed rubber plate or strip between the head and holder. Fig. 4 is a view showing types arranged in the holder.
A designates the head of the implement, consisting of a piece of hard and tough wood or other suitable material adapted to withstand the usages to which the implement may be subjected and to securely and durably hold and sustain the type-holdin g plate. The head-piece A is of such length and breadth as may be desired to take the requisite number of types used in the impression and has longitudinally-arranged recesses or grooves 1 2 on each side, substantially as shown, forming heavy rounded portions along each side edge at the upper portion of the head-block, eX- tending the length thereof, to provide convenient grip-places for the hand in the use of the implement.
B designates the type holding plate or holder, consisting of a substantial metal plate having a length and breadth substantially identical with those of the headpiece and formed with side flanges or ears 3, having openings for the reception of fastening-screws 4, projected into the material of the head, substantially as shown.
The bottom of the holder 13 is formed with side flanges 5 6 and a central rib or flange 7 intermediate of the side flanges, the spaces between these flanges constituting seats in which the rubber and elastic type are set and fixed, substantially as shown in Fig. 4.- of the drawings.
Between the type-holding plate and the head-piece is arranged a comparatively thin rubber sheet 8, the purpose of which is to relieve the parts from the effects of the contacts or impacts made in making the impressions.
(l designates the elastic type, whioh are held in the ways or grooves by elastic expansion against the flanges of the holder and of course may be of any style.
The fastening-ears on the sides of the holder are essential, inasmuch as the usual means for fastening the plate to the head by pro- 3 ectin g screws or nails through it into the head is defective, since the fasteners soon become loosened and the implement rendered useless or seriously damaged, and by the interposition of the rubber strip between the plate and the head the parts are preserved and protected against the usual results of impact and pressure.
My invention is particularly adapted for use in marking heavy and rough boxes, bags, and packages of freight shipped and received in railroad traffic and is utilized by inserting the proper characters or types in the seats prepared for them and then after inking the types impressing them on the inclosures of the goods.
What I claim is- As an improved article of manufacture, a hand-stamp comprising a solid block of wood having longitudinal groovesin the sides thereof and heavy rounded portions along each top side extending the length thereof and a plane under face, a thin elastic covering secured to the under face, a type-holding plate fitted to the head over the elastic, formed with integral vertical side ears between which the head-block is arranged, and having integral downwardly-extending side flanges 5, 6, and central integral flange 7, fastenings through the side ears, and elastic types between the flanges.
In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
MATTHEW TINKER. Attest:
