WORKMANS TIME-RECORDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent NO. 594,949, dated December 7, 1897.

To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, SIGMUND HELLER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Saaz, Bohemia, Austria-I-Iungary, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vorkmens Time-Recorders, (patented in Austria July 23, 1897,) of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to apparatus by means of'which the hour and minute at which a workman begins work are automatically recorded on the insertion of a check and whereby the departure of a workman before the usual time is also recorded in a similar manner.
To enable my invention to be fully understood, I will describe it by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front view of apparatus constructed according to my invention, the front of the case thereof being removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the apparatus, and Fig. 4 is a view of a detail drawn to a larger scale.
The apparatus consists of a case a, suitably constructed and resting upon a support b, the said case a carrying the whole of the mechanism for effecting the automatic recording, and the clock c, which controls the movement of the recording-roller, being arranged in a suitable manner on the top of the casing. Projecting from the upper part of the case there are arranged as many check-chutes d as there are workmen whose time is to be checked, the said chutes being arranged in two or more superposed rows and each being pivotally mounted to the casing at e. These chutes d are provided with tubes d', forming continuations thereof, each of which tubes opens into a tube g, all of which latter are suspended upon a common pivot or bolt f. The. parts d of the chutes and the tubes g are made of such a shape in cross-section that they allow the passage through theml of a check of a parn ticular size and thickness. The said chutetubes d also open, as above described, into the tubes g and are so arranged that they swing down or drop when the check which has been inserted in the chute has reached the end thereof, so as to allow the said check to fall through the tube g. When the chute swings, as above described, upon its pivot e, the open end d, through which the check is inserted, is swung inside the casing, wherein a hook 7L is so arranged that it engages with the said chute and prevents it dropping forward again into its normal position. The chiite-opening is thus held back, so that no further check can be inserted in the chute. The tubes g are curved at theirlower ends and are each provided at the part on which the check when released from the chute drops with a slot, into which the check falls, so as to depress a printing-levert, the said check then passing through the remaining portion of the tube and being delivered into a receptacle j with an inclined bottom. This receptacle j is divided into as many compartments as there are tubes g and chutes d, so that each check falls into its own compartment. Each of these compartments is provided at its lower part with an orifice j', through which the checks, when the receptacle j is pulled somewhat for ward, fall, so as to drop into a drawer 7.1, which is also divided into separate compartments, from which the checks can be subsequently withdrawn. The front of the casing is provided with a door Z, which opens downward and is provided on the outside with a board or slate Z', having thereon the names of the workmen and their numbers, beside which numbers the corresponding checks can be hung by the attendant, so that they can be removed at the conclusion of the days work by the workmen.
The recording is effected in the following manner: Directly underneath the curved portions of the tubes g I arrange rollers n and fn', which are supported on the shaft or axle a", rotatably mounted in bearings m and driven bybevel-gear o from the mechanism of a clock c, arranged at'the top of the casing and connected by a long rod o with the bevel-gear o. The breadth of the rollers corresponds to the number of the tubes g provided, and it is not necessary to employ two rollers n and u', as a single roller may be employed, in which case, however, the chutes d must all be arranged in a series and the mechanism for operating the rollers from the clock c must be arranged at the side of the roller. The rollers n and u', which are rotated by means of IOO cranks p on the axle or shaft u", are every morning before work begins or every evening after the daily work is concluded provided with a card which is furnished with hour and minute divisions and also with divisions for cach separate t-ube g. The cards must be so applied to the rollers that the iigure representing the hour at which work is begun is exactly underneath the stamp or type of the recording device when the clock indicates the said hour. Furthermore, the hour-division of the cards, the circumference of the rollers, and also the gear for transmitting the motion of the clock to the rollers must be so arranged that the rollers make one revolution in twelve hours and also that every hour-division of the cards is underneath the printing devices when the clock indicates the said hour. Each printing stamp or type q is carried on a lever t', which is pivotally connected to a bolt r in such a manner that it does not normally rest upon the roller, but must be pressed thereon by the falling check. A second lever fr is also pivotally mounted upon the bolt r, the said second lever fr' being arranged immediately underneath the above-mentioned lever il and having opposite the printing-stamp q a hole provided with a raised rim or ring, through which hole the stamp q passes. A lever s' is pivoted on a bolt s in a frame s, the said lever s' being provided with a pin t, which passes through the lever t' and rests upon the lever r. A button or knob t' is arranged in connection with each lever s', and by depressing this knob t' it presses down the lever o' through the medium of the lever s', so that the ring on the said lever comes in Contact with the roller. When pressure is removed from the button or knob t', the lever 7" returns to its normal position. Mechanism of the kind above described-namely, the combination of the lever and stamp or typeis provided in connection with each tube g, and the various knobs or buttons tl are arranged in two rows in the plate y. The whole arrangement-that is to say,the various tubes coupled together byarodv with a handle t" in such a manner that when the handle t" is pulled forward the tubes g are pulled backward by the lever u; and the lever w", which swings upon the fulcrum w', and the whole arrangement of levers and stamps swings upon the pivot fr through an angle of ninety degrees, so that the stamps and rings come in contact with an inking-roller 00. This movement of the tubes g slightly lifts the catches or hooks 7L, so as to disengage the chutes d, which then swing or drop forward into their normal posi tion.
The operation of my apparatus is as follows: At the beginning of the days work the apparatus is in its normal conditionthat is to say, with the numbered chutes d in their open position. The workmen on arriving insert their checks, which are correspondingly fresh one.

Each chuteopenin is closed immediately after the check has been inserted, so that it cannot be opened from the outside of the apparatus. From the card can now be accurately seen whether each workman arrived at the proper time or by how much he was behind time, and a glance at the outside of the apparatus will show which workmen have arrived and which have not arrived, as in the case of absent workmen 'the chutes d remain open or in their normal position. Should now a workman leave early, he must apply to the attendant entrusted with the control of the apparatus for his cheek, as all the latter remain in the compartments j until the close of the days work. The vattendant opens the front door Z and presses upon the knob or button t' bearing the number of the check required by the workman, whereby by means of the lever i" a circle is stamped upon the card which accurately indicates the time at which the workman leaves. By slightly moving the recept-acle j the checks fall into the compartments of the drawer 79, from which each workman on leaving the works can remove his check. Having now particularly described and as i eertained the nature of my said invention and g in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what l claim isg with their above described parts-are l. A workmans time-recorder, comprising in combination the following dcvices,namely, fa casing, a number of tubes pivotally suspended therein and through which checks l inserted from the outside can pass, each tube having a bent portion provided with a slot `therein through which the check may profgect, swinging chutes into which the checks are first inserted having each a tube opening into one of these tubes, a catch to hold Q each chute after its inserted check has passed from its tube into one of the suspended tubes, a printing-lever carrying a stamp and depressed by such projecting check, a roller, carrying cards to be printed and clockwork for actuating the same, a receptacle for the rchecks provided with an inclined bottom and a series of compartments, a drawer beneath the same into which the checks may pass, and a printing-lever provided with a IOO IIO
button and adapted to be pressed upon the card to print upon it an indication of the time the Workman leaves llis Work, all substantially as shown and described.
