Patented Dec. 7, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL W. GILLI N, OF PAULTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
INGOT-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,867, dated December '7, 1897.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. GILLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paulton, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented ordiscovered new and useful Improvements in Ingot-Ton gs, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of my device, showing the tongs closed. Fig. 2 is a partial elevation showing the position of the mechanism when the tongs are opened at their widest. Fig. 3 is a sectional view along the line 3 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a detailed view of the eccentric-strap.
The purpose of my invention is to provide means whereby ingot-tongs may be manipulated, opened, and closed by one man. At present two or more men are requiredat least one man to manipulate each sweep and others to relieve these on account of the severe labor.
The following is a detailed description of my invention.
1 and 1 are the sweeps of the ingot-tongs, correspondingly notched at 2 2.
3 3 are two braces fixed to sweep 1 and on which sweep 1 is pivoted at 3*. J ournaled in braces 3 3 and housings 4 4 is shaft 5, upon which is rigidly mounted eccentric 6. Pivoted to sweep 1 by pin 7 is eccentric-strap 8, in which eccentric 6 is fitted to work. It is evident that when shaft 5 is revolved and the eccentric is turned into the position shown in Fig. 1
spondin g extremity of sweep 1, the extremities of the sweeps thus assuming their nearest re1a t-ive position. On the other hand, if the shaft be revolved until the eccentric occupies the position shown in Fig. 2 the sweep 1 will slide along sweep 1, and the extremities of the sweeps will attain their maximum distance apart. I
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In ingot-tongs, the combination of sweeps with sliding contact; a revoluble shaft; an cecentric on said shaft, and an eccentric-strap encircling said eccentric and pivoted to one of said sweeps.
2. In ingot-tongs,the combination of sweeps; a brace fixed to one of said sweeps; the-other sweep pivoted to said brace; a revoluble shaft journaledin said brace; an eccentric mounted 55 on said shaft, and pivotal connection between said eccentric and said pivoted sweep.
3. In in got-tongs, the combination of sweeps with sliding contact; braces fixed to one of said sweeps; the other sweep pivoted to said braces; a revoluble shaft journaled in said braces; an eccentric mounted on said shaft, and an eccentric-strap encircling said eccentric and pivotally connected with said pivoted sweep.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of December, A. D. 1896.
SAMUEL W. GILLIN.
