AUTOMATIC FAN ATTACHMENT FOR HAMMOCKS, 800.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,814, dated November 30, 1897. Application filed April 29, 1897. Serial No. 634,390. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WHITEOED H. SWEET, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Auburn, in the township of Cranston, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Automatic Fan Attachment for Hammocks, Swings, &c., of which the following is a specification.

The purpose of my invention is to provide a fan attachment for hammocks and other swinging or rocking bodies in which the fan will beautomatically operated by the oscillation of the body to which it is attached. The details of construction and method of operation will be more fully described in the specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hammock provided with two of my fan attachments. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the fan and its supporting and operating means. Fig. 3 is a front view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a front elevation showing my fan attachment applied to a swing.

1 represents a bracket adapted to be secured by bolts or screws to the opposite walls of a building or to the sides of an upright frame, Figs. 1 and 6. Said bracket is openslotted, as at 2, to receive one end of an arm 3, pivotally secured therein for movement vertically for..purposes of adjustment. Said arm 3 is provided at its lower end with an offset extension or arm 4, preferably integral with said arm 3 and provided with a bearing or sleeve 5. The lower end of said arm 3 is also provided with a slot. 6, in which is rotatably fitted a pinion 7, rigidly secured upon a spindle 8, journal'ed in said lower end of said arm 3 and in said sleeve 5 of the extension 4. Adjustably secured upon the outer end of said spindle and extending therefrom preferably at right angles is a fan having one or more blades b, as desired. Pivotally mounted upon said arm 3, preferably at a point, as a, intermediate of the length of said I arm,is a segment-rack 9,provided with means, preferably a depending integral hook 10, for releasably holding one end of the hammock or swing. Said rack is located and arranged to mesh with the pinion 7 and has movement freely as actuated by the hammock or other attached body to thereby rotate said pinion and operate the fan.

My fan attachment may be applied singly or in pairs, as shown in the drawings.

11 and 12 represent, respectively, a hammockand a swing; but I do not limit its application to these specific forms. It is applicable and useful in connection with any form of swinging, rocking, or oscillating body or device.

The brackets 1 may be secured to the overhead ceiling of a piazza or room, or they may be secured in any manner that any hammock or swing support can be applied.

My invention can also be applied to rocking-chairs.

Modifications can be made without departing from the principle of my invention.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein-described fan-attachment for hammocks and analogous devices, consisting of an arm pivotally supported at one end for vertical movement, a spindle having one end journaled in the free end of said arm, and its free end extending at right angles therefrom, a pinion-gear rigidly secured upon the confined end of said spindle, and rotatable therewith, a segment-rack pivotally mounted upon said arm for movement transversely of the latter, and arranged to mesh with said pinion andby its movement to rotate the latter and said spindle, and fan blades or wings secured upon the free end of said spindle and rotatable therewith, all combined with each other and with a hammock or other oscillating body, and means for supporting the whole.
