Be it known that we, JOHN W. ARMSTRONG and NICHOLAS M. BERRY, citizens of the United States, residing at Searcy, in the county of l/Vhite and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Wagon-Standard, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to wagon-standards, its object being to provide a standard of malleable iron which may be attached to the bolster without mortising or otherwise weakening the latter and which may also be readily detached.

Another object of the invention is to provide a standard with a socket in itsupperend for the reception of a stake.

With these objects in view' the invention consists in the several details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure l isa side elevation of a section of a bolster with our improved standard secured in place. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig.l. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line of Fig. l.

l represents the bolster,and 2 the standard. The standard is made of malleable iron and is recessed at its sides, as indicated at 3, for the purpose of decreasing its weight without impairing its strength.

4 represents the base-plate of the standard, integral therewith and extending outwardly therefrom. on each of its sides. From the lower face of the base-plate bosses (indicated by 5) extend, and/ these bosses are centrally perforated, asindicated at 6, these perforations alsoextending through the base-plate.

In theupper end of the standard a socketl 7 isformed for the reception of a stake 8, and from the bottom of the socket two openings 9 lead outwardly into the hollow parts 3 of the standard. The object of these openings 9 is to permit water and dirt which may get into the socket to pass out freely therefrom.

In attaching the standard to the bolster boltholes 10 are bored through the bolster to aline with the openings 6 in the base-plate, and the upper ends of the bolt-holes l0 are enlarged, as indicated at ll, for the reception of the bosses 5. Bolts l2v are then inserted through the openings 6 and l0, and nuts 13 screw on the lower end of the bolts against the under face of the bolster until the standard is firmly locked in position on the bolster.

From the aforegoing description it will be seen that we produce a standard which is light, strong, and durable and which may be easily attached to a bolster without mortising or otherwise weakening the latter, and that it may also be easily removed. By forming the stake-socket in the upper end of the standard we dispense with the ordinary stake-rings,

v which are frequently inthe way or otherwise objectionable. The bosses on the base-plate and the bolts serve to firmly and rigidly secure the standard in place, and the standard can be attached to the bolster on a new wagon afterit has been painted without marring any of the painted surface that will be exposed. The standard can be made and attached to the bolster with no more expense than is involved in making the ordinary wooden standard and mortising it into the bolster. The

mortises weaken the bolster, andv very fre` quently the strain on the wooden standard splits the bolster. VThese disadvantages are entirely absent when our standard is used, and the cost of repair to the wagon will be greatly decreased.

It will be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim is The combination with a bolster provided with recesses in its upper face, of a standard having a base-plate extending outwardly therefrom on each side, said base-plate having bosses formedvon its lower surface to fit into the recesses in the bolster, securing-bolts passing through the base-plate, bosses, and
