MAST OR HANGER FOR STREET-LAMPS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,075, dated November 23, 1897'.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be n known that I, JULIUS GIROS, of Auegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Masts Aor Hangers for Street-Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved mast, showing the lamp in its normal raised position and by dotted lines the lamp in two positions of being lowered; and Fig. 2 is a detached view of the winding-drum.

In the drawings, 2 -represents the mast, which may be of the usual form now employed in street-lamps, and 3I is the jib eX- tending from the mast at right angles thereto. Pivoted at or near the outer end of the jib 3 is a bar the outer end ofwhich is curved over the end of the jib, and may be provided .with a head or stop 4, adapted to strike against the upper face of the jib when the longer and inner arm 5 of the bar is lowered, and thereby to limit the movement of said inner arm. This inner arm 5 curves downwardly from the pivotal point and then eX- tends upwardly toward the jib and the mast, as is shown in Fig. 1, which curvature perv mits the lamp to be brought gradually to rest without jar, the curvature of the arm acting as a buffer. Near the end of the arm 5 and secured to the jib 3 is a pulley 6. A cord or wire 7 is secured to the end of the arm 5, and passing over the pulley 6 extends to the drum 8, that is secured to the mast near the base thereof. This drum is provided with a handle 9 and a ratchet 10, and it is adapted to wind and unwind the cord 7. Suspended from the arm 5 by atrolley 11 is the lamp 12, in this case an electric lamp, the trolley being adapted to run by gravity along the arm 5. The usual electric wires are shown at 13.

The operation is as follows: The lamp 12 being on the bar 5 and at the outer end of the jib and it being desired to lower the lamp the oord '7 is unwound from the drum 8, which lowers the free end of the arm 5 until the stop 4 comes in contact'with the jib,

wardly the trolley 11, carrying the lamp 12, will run by gravity down the arm 5 into the vbight of the cord 7, in which it is lowered to the of the jib, the cord is rewound on the drum until the slack in the cord is taken up and the arm 5 is restored to its normal position, inelining downwardly toward the end of the jib, when the trolley 11 being released from the bight of the cord 7 will run down the arm 5, carrying the lamp 12 to its normal position under the end of the jib 3.

The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. The' lamp being suspended over the roadway may be easily and rapidly brought to the mast and lowered for the purpose of replacing the carbons or for other purposes.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a mast or hanger for street-lamps, the combination of a jib, a stiff arm pivoted to the jib and having a free inner end, a trolley -carrying thelarnp adapted to run on the arm, and a cord attached to the free end of the arm in which the trolley is caught and suspended as it leaves the arm and by which it is lowered; substantially as described.

In a mast or hanger for street-lamps, the combinationof ajib, a pulley, a stiff arm pivoted to the jib having a free inner end, a lamp-carrying trolley having a grooved wheel which wheel .is constructed and arranged to run on the arm, and a cord attached to the end of the arm and extending over said pulley in which cord the grooved wheel of the trolley is caught and suspended as it leaves the arm and by which it is lowered; substantially as described.

3. In a mast orhanger for street-lamps, the combination of a jib, an arm pivoted thereto having a stop for limiting the downward motion of the free end of said arm, a trolley adapted to run on the arm and a cord attached to the end of the arm in which the trolley is caught and suspended as it leaves the arm and by which it is lowered; substantially as described.

4. In a mast or hanger for street-lamps, the

combination of a jib, a pulleyfa sti arm pivoted to the jib having a free inner end, a stop for limiting the downward movement of the free end of said arm, a lamp-carrying trolley having a grooved wheel, which wheel is constructed and arranged to run on the arm, and a cord attached to the end of the arm and eX- tending over said pulley, in which cord the grooved wheel of the trolley is caught and suspended as it leaves the arm and by which it is lowered; substantially as described.

5. In a mast or hanger for street-lamps, the combination of a jib, an arm pivoted thereto having a stop at its outer end for limiting the downward motion of the free end of said arm, a trolley adapted to run on the arm, and a cord attached to the end of the arm in which the trolley is caught and suspended as it leaves the arm and by which it is lowered, substantially as described.

6. In a mast or hanger for street-lamps, the combination of a jib, and an arm pivoted thereto having a downward and inward curve toward the mast from the pivotal point; substantially as described.

7. In a mast or hanger for streetdamps, the combination of a jib, and an arm pivoted to the jib having a free end and provided with a suitable stop for limiting the downward motion of said free end, said arm having a downward and inward curve toward the mast from the pivotal point; substantially as described.
