W. W. DODGE.
PAPER SCALE.
No. 593,927. Patented Nov. 16,1897.
, haven/0W W rW UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
WILLIAM W. DODGE, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
PAPER-SCALE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,927, dated November 16, 1897. Application filed December 9, 1896. Serial No. 615,067. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it nmty concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. DODGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Weighing-Scale Attachments for Pencils and Penholders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in scales in which an upright rod attachable to a pencil or penholder and a foldable crossbeam or lever, whereon is a graded scale indicating weight, can be turned on its pivot parallel with the upright rod and be placed in a tubular cover closed at one end and of a fixed heft, which cover is also used as a weight; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple paper-scale for which the weight is used as a sheath or cover. I attain this by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is the upright rod of the scales attachable to a pencil or penholder. Fig. 2 is a foldable lever or cross-beam. Fig. 3 is the tubular sheath or cover, which is also used as a weight. Fig. 4 is a view of the scales in operation. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of my invention when folded and placed in the cover or sheath.
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is a pencil or penholder, to which, by means of a cap 13, an upright rod 0 is attached. The rod 0 has the projecting pivot or knifeedge f.
D is a beam provided with the perforation g, by means of which this beam is pivoted upon the projection f, thereby dividing the beam D into a small and a longer arm of a lever. The small arm of beam D has at its extremity the pointed curved hook g. The longer arm of beam D is preferably foldable at h, as indicated in the drawings. Upon the longer arm of beam D is a scale indicated by notches in said beam.
E represents a tubular cover of a certain fixed weight. It is open at e and solid at e and is further provided with the eyelet c. This tubular cover is used as a weight in my scales when not used as a cover. The top of the cap B has preferably a screw-thread, and
there are also corresponding screw-threads in the open end e of the cover E.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The position of my apparatus when not in use is as indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, wherein the cover E is secured over the top of cap B and wherein the longer arm of beam D is folded upon itself, as shown. If I now desire to use my scales, I unscrew the cover E, bring the beam D at right angles with the rod 0 on pivot f, extend or unfold the longer arm of beam D, and place the cap, by means of eyelet 6, upon the beam D. The substance to be weighed is then fastened upon the hook g and then my scales are ready for operation.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As anew article of manufacture, aweighing-scales attachment for pencils and other staffs comprising an attachable cap, a scalelever pivotally and detachably connected to said cap and provided at one end with a suitable retainer, and a hollow sheath or cover attachable to said cap and provided with means for slidably connecting said sheath or cover to the scale-lever, whereby said sheath or cover serves as the scale-balance when attached to the lever and as a means for inclosing the scale-lever when the scale is dismantled, as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a weighing-scales attachment for pencils or other staffs comprising a cap attachable to a staff, a sectional, foldable scale-lever detachably attached to said cap, and a weighted sheath or cover having means for slidably attaching the same to the scale-lever and constructed for attachment to the cap, for the purposes described, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a threaded cap 13, a rod 0 rigid with said cap and provided with the pivot f, a foldable scale-lever having an opening g to receive the pivot f, and a weighted cover or sheath E threaded at its open end for attachment to the cap and provided with a hook e to suspend said cover from the scale-lever, as and for the purposes described.
WILLIAM WV. DODGE.
