.MATCH-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,905, dated November 16, 1897. I Application filed December 22, 1896. Serial No. 616.5 96. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER W. PENNING- TON, of Butte, in the county of Silver Bow and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Match-Safes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
' This invention relates to match-safes designed to be placed upon a counter or similar convenient place; and the object is to provide a match-safe of a simple construction and easily operated to remove the matches one at a time from the magazine, thus insuring economy in the use of matches.
I will describe a match-safe'embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a match-safe embodying my invention with a portion of the side wall broken away to more clearly show certain parts. Fig.2 is'a top plan view and partial section thereof, and Fig. 3 is an end elevation and partial section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. 1
The match-safe comprises a magazine or chamber 1, the side walls of which are formed by the upwardly-extended portions 2 of the base 3, and the end walls of this magazine or chamber are preferably formed of a transparent material-such, for instance, as glass 4- and this magazine may be provided with a suitable cover. As here shown, it is provided with a top cover 5.
The base-pieces 3 extend forward from the glass fronts 4:, and mounted to slide between said base-pieces is a carriage 6. This carriage 6 has a Width substantially equal to the distance between the base-pieces 3, and, as here shown, it slides upon a base-board 7, secured to the said base-pieces.
The upper side of the carriage 6 is provided with a transverse channel 8 of a sufficient depth to receive a match, and to conveniently remove a match from the channel I provide at each side of the channel and near its center depressions 9 and 10, into which thethumb and finger of a person may be inserted to grasp a match. I have here shown the carriage 6 as provided with two channels 8, so that matches may be removed from either front of the magazine, and the ends of this carriage are provided .with suitable knobs or buttons 11.
In operation while the carriage 6 is in position to bring the slot 8 into the magazine 1 amatch will fall into said slot, and then the carriage may be drawn outward, as plainly indicated in, the drawings, and the match may then be removed therefrom.
In connection with the device I may employ a lighting mechanism designed to ignite a match as the match is drawn across the same by the outward movement of the carriage. This lighting mechanism consists of a plug 12, designed to eitend through an opening 13 in one of the base portions 3, and the inner end of this plug 12 has a roughened surface against which the end of the match will abrade. The plug 12 is mounted on a spring-arm 14, having pivotal connection 15 with the base portion 3, so when it is not desired to ignite the matches during the movement of the carriage the said plug 12 may be drawn out of the opening 13 and turned downward, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. To force a match longitudinally against the plug 12, a spring-plate 16 is secured to the inner side of the base portion 3 opposite that towhich the plug is attached. This spring-plate 16 is curved inward and into the channeled edge of the carriage 6.
When a match is drawn across the igniter or plug 12,. it is necessary to hold the match down in the slot 8. For this purpose I employ fingers 17, attached to the base-pieces 3 and bearing upon the upper surface of the carriage 6. Of course after the match shall have been ignited the carriage mustbe moved outward sufficiently far to pass the match beyond the ends of the fingers 7, when it may be removed, as before described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to Patentsecure by Letters A match-safe, comprising a magazine for ments under the magazine, substantially as matches, a carriage mounted to slide across specified. the openlower end of the magazine, the said I T carriage being provided with two transverse VALTER PENNING1 channels to receive matches whereby a match Vitnesses: may be carried out of the magazine by the J NO. M. BITTER, carriage in either of its longitudinal move- 0. R. FERGUSON.
