ALEXANDER BAIN, Oil BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
HYDRAULIC STE ERING MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,871, dated November 16, 1897.
Application filed May 6, 1897. Serial No.'635,328. (No model.)
' zen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn,
in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Steering Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a hydraulic motor of simple construction, and more especially intended for use in connection with steering mechanism, and which can be readily kept in. order and can transmit power to considerable'distances; and the invention resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specifica tion and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a hydraulic motor embodying my invention; and Fig.2 is a sectional plan view showing means whereby a rudder may be operated by the steering-engine. v
The device is shown as applied to steering of vessels. A hand or steering wheel 1 by means of gears 2 and 3 rotates shaft 4, which by gearfi engages rack 6, forming part of rod 7 of the double-acting piston 8, whose cylinder 9 is fixed at any suitable point or support. From opposite portionsof the cylinder-that is to say, from portions located on opposite sides of the piston- lead tubes 10 and 10 to a cylinder 11. The tubes 10 and 10 can be of suitable length and direction to respectivelylead to opposite portions of cylinder 11, which latter is fixed at a suitable point or support.
The piston 12- of cylinder 11 has its rod 13 formed with a rack 14 engaging gear 15 on shaft 16, which connects by gear 17 with gear 18 on shaft 19. This shaft 19 by gear or connection 20'actuates the valves of a steering engine or cylinder 21.
The cylinders 9 and 11,with tubes 10 and 10, being filled with water or liquid, the throw of piston 8 in one directionor another will cause the fluid to flow or press back and forth to correspondingly move piston 12 with rack 14.
In case the pressure at one side or another of piston 8 should be diminished or lessened, as by a leak, the want or vacuum can be automatically supplied by a pressure-tank 22, connecting by inlet-tube 23 and branches 24 and 24: with opposite portions of cylinder 9. The
tube or branches 24 and 24' each have inlet" valves of suitable construction, so that when the pressure at one side or another of piston 8 falls the corresponding valve will open to allow liquid or pressure from tank 22 to enter cylinder 9 for proper compensation. Equal pressure on opposite sides of pistons 8 and 12 can be secured by the equalizing-tubes 25, the valves or cocks 26 of which are closed when the pressure is equalized.
The shaft 19, with gear 20, is shown in Fig. 2 engaging racks on the slide or operating rods 2'7, actuating slide-valves 28 to admit steam or pressure through ports 29 into cylinders 21, so as to reciprocate the pistons 30,
which by rods, or connections 31 and arms 32 actuate the rudder or steering post 33. Each cylinder is double-acting, so as to be capable of forcing its piston in either direction. Should one cylinder and its connection get out of order, the other cylinder can still serve to swivel the rudder-post 33.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isx 1. The combination with two fixed cylinders each provided with a double-acting piston, of tubes made to respectively connect opposite portions of the cylinders, an actuating gear and rack for one of the pistons, a steering gear and rack actuated by the other piston, a pressure-tank, and tubes with inlet-valves made to lead from the pressure-tank to opposite portions of one of the cylinders substantially as described.

The combination with two fixed cylinders each provided with a double-acting piston, of tubes made to respectively connect opposite portions of the cylinders, an actuating gear and rack for one of the pistons, a rack actuatopposite portions of the cylinders, a rack ac- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set tuated by the second piston, transmissionmy hand in the presence of two subscribing 1o gears actuated from said rack, a steering-en- Witnesses.
