To CLU whom it may concern;-

Be it known that I, ANDREAS ANDER'sEN, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, and a resident of Tistedalen, Norway, have invented certain Anew and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Barking'and Washing Logs, (for which I have obtained patents in Norway, No. 5,093, dated November 18, 1895, and in Finland, No. 669, dated December 17, 1896,) of which the following is `a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide an apparatus in which the wood that at woodpulp mills at a later stage is ground to woodpulp is, on the surface of water in a tank, freed from bark, projecting knots, sand, and dirt. The suitably funnelshaped lower-portion of the tank a being iilled with water, the wood that is iioating on the surface of this water is subjected to the action of the rotating shafts or rollers c d until all the bark and dirt are loosened. The removal of the bark and the washing are done by the radial hoe-shaped arms or irons d on the rotating shafts c, which put the water, and thereby also the wood, in motion. Owing to the upward pressure of the water the wood is constantly brought within the reach of the outer end of the rotating arms d, whereby the bark and other foreign substances are, so to speak, cut off from the wood. The wood having been cleaned, the contents of the tank-Wood, water, and refuse-are emptied through the trap-door or shutter f, which is operated by means of the chain g running over the pulleys h h from the drum 1l. The wood then falls on the inclined plane 7c, whence it is carried voff by means of the lift Z. ln the lower part of this lift there-are a number of spouts m, that cleanse the wood from what dirt and loose bark may still be adhering to it.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy 1. An apparatus for barking and washing logs and the like, consisting of a tank adapted to contain Water to float the logs, and rigid rotating beaters having cutting extremities arranged to act upon said logs as they are yieldingly supported by the water, substantially as'described.
