of bale-tie which is known as adjustable and which has at one end an eye or loop and in said eye or loop a saddle, clasp, or catchplate provided with a V-shaped angle in which .the inserted free end of the band becomes wedged, and also so constructed that when strain is applied to the band upon the bale the arms of the catch-plate or saddle are drawn together, thus producing a gripping action upon the said inserted end.

In Letters Patent No. 466, 563, granted to me January 5, 1892, I have described and claimed a bale-tie having an eye at one end, in which eye is disposed a catch-plate,saddle, or clasp having an angle adapted to receive the end of the band,'which becomes wedged therein, and also constructed so as to-grip the band when strain is applied in the manner above noted. That clasp or saddle is provided with an external groove or channel, in which the wire of the eye snugly fits, and this groove or channel extends entirely around the exterior of said saddle, which is therefore made or bent in curved form in cross-section. In my present device the saddle, clasp, or catchplate is made of a flat piece of metal, and instead of the eye of the band lying in a groove or channel extending entirely around said clasp it is received in notches formed in the extremity thereof. The ends of the saddle are turned or bent outward, so as to allow the said wire to lie snugly in said notches, and by this means the saddle is held in place in the loop.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device. Fig. 2 is a top View, and Fig. 3 shows the saddle, clasp,

or catch-plate separately.

A represents the bale-band, having at one end a-loop a, which is constructed to receive the catch-plate, saddle, thimble, or clasp B. This plate is made of metal and is provided with a bent middle portion 1), adapted to enter the contracted end of the loop a, and with diverging ends 19. In operation after the bale-band has been placed around the bale the free end a thereof is inserted through the loop a, so that it enters the V-shaped thimble, clasp, saddle, or catch-plate B and becomes jammed in the an.- gle thereof. after insertion in said saddle is tucked under its standing part, as indicated in Fig. 1. The efiect of strain upon the band when thus in place is to draw the free end thereof tightly into the V-shaped angle in the saddle or catchplate, and at the same time to produce a gripping action by the drawing together of the ends of said saddle through the contraction of the loop or eye a.

I claim- 1. A wire bale-band having at one end a loop or eye provided with a saddle, clasp, or

catch-plate held in said loop, the ends only of said plate being clamped against the side wires of the loop, substantially as described.

2. A wire bale-band having at one end an eye, and in said eye a saddle or clasp formed of a fiat metal plate bent to produce a V- shaped angle wherein the opposite end of said band may, on insertion, become wedged, and means for holding said plate in said eye, substantially as described.

5. A wire bale-tie having at one end a loop or eye provided with a saddle or catch-plate, 13, having the notches 1) 6 into which the side wires of the loop fit, the ends b b of the plate being clamped against said wires, substantially as described.
