R. A. CORGORAN.
PROTECTOR AND SUPPORTER FOR HARNESS REINS.
No. 593,642. Patented. Nov. 16, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROSA ANNA OOROORAN, OFSLAUGHTER, LOUISIANA.
PROTECTOR AND SUPPORTER FOR HARNESS-REINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,642, dated November 16, 1897.
Application filed April 1 3 1 3 9 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LRosA ANNA OoRooRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Slaughter, in the parish of East Baton Rouge,
State of Louisana, have invented a new and useful Protector and Supporter for Harness- Reins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a protector and supporter for harness-reins attachable to vehicles.
The objects of my improvement are, first, to provide a support for harness-reins which will hold the reins beyond the reach or interference of the tail of the animal drawing the vehicle; second, to prevent the reins from touching the sweat and dirt, thus causing them to be more durable; third, to prevent the driver pulling the wrong rein or getting them tangled. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which-.
Letter A represents the base or lower part of my device afterremoval of the upper part B.
Letter B represents the upper part of my device detached from the base part A.
Letter 0 represents the bolts and taps which are intended to hold the base part of my device to the vehicle and also to fasten the upper portion of my device into the grooves or slides of the base part at any desired height; A, or base, eighteen inches high, and B, or top, twenty inches high.
Letter A represents the base-piece of my device, made of sheet-steel or other metal, having the sides or edges turned over, so as to form a groove or tube in which the wire rods 19 of the upper part B can easily slide, also having round holes a just at the edge of the grooves or tubes a, through which the bolt c can be placed for the purpose of holding the base and upper part of the device together at any desired height, also having three .oblong holes or slots a through which the base part A can be held firmly by the bolt-and tap C to any vehicle.
B represents the upper portion of my device, made of steel wire or other metal, and spools made of wood or other material. The wire I? may be one rod and bent at the top, so as to be an axle or spindle for the spool b the lower portion of the wire 5 being parallel and sufficiently wide apart to fit into the Serial No. 587,382. (No modem grooves or tubes at of the base-piece A. The wire 6 is attached to wire b by solder or otherwise at points 12 and b and bent so as to form axles for spools b 0 represents the, bolt and tap by which my device may be attached to a vehicle and also by which the parallel legs I) can be held and tightened in the tubes a.
o is the bolt, bent at right angles at c to form the head of the bolt.
0 is a notch made to fit over the tube a, so thatwhen the tap c is screwed down on the bolt 0 the tube a is pressed upon the legs b and holds them firmly.
To use this device, I attach the base-piece A to the vehicle as may be best through the oblong holes a or a by bolt and tap O and at the bottom of base-piece A by common screws at a. I then insert the legs of wire I) in the grooves or tubes at and press them down until the spools b come to the level of the hands of the driver of the vehicle or at any desired height. Then place a bolt 0 in each of the two holes a and screw on the tap 0 onto the bolt 0 and screw down till the tubes a are tightened on the wire legs Z). The driver can then place the reins on the spools desired, and the device is ready for use.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination in a rein-support of a sheet-metal base having its side edges turned over upon the body to form tubes, a supporting-frame consisting of a piece of wire bent to form parallel vertical legs adjustably supported in said tube, said legs connected together at the top by a cross-wire, a spool or roller mounted on said cross-wire, a second wire mounted upon the legs at right angles thereto at a point below the top, the ends of said second wire bent downwardly to form braces and attached to the legs, and two spools or rollers mountedupon the horizontal portion of this wire one at each end thereof, be-
tween the legs and the downwardly-bent portion, substantially as described.
