HOT-WATER ACCU M U LATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,418, dated November 9, 1897.
Application filed March 22, 1897 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WASILIY KOUZNEZOFF, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Moscow, in the Empire of Russia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hot-W'ater Accumulators for Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to apparatus for increasing the working capacity of a locomotive to enable the same to perform its work with greater certainty or regularity and with less consumption of fuel; and in such connection it relates particularly to the general construction and arrangement of the apparatus for said purposes.
As practice has demonstrated, in the known type of six-wheeled locomotive it has not been possible to work it to its full extent or capacity nor to vary the load with any degree of saving without considerable outlay and waste of the fuel in deriving the requisite power ordinarily required of present-day locomotives. The most practical manner of remedying such defects as above mentioned at the present time is to replace such a locomotive by another of more modern type.
My invention has been designed and is so arranged that the working power of the locomotive can be greatly increased at nominal expense, due to the employment of a simple and efficient form of apparatus in conjunction therewith to insure a greater capacity or power being derived therefrom and in which it is possible to vary the load at will with a great saving by the avoidance of much of the waste of fuel incident to the use of presentday locomotives.
My invention, stated in general terms, consists in providing a locomotive-boiler with a hot-water accumulator and its accessories when constructed and arranged in connection with the boiler or with a tender at a convenient distance therefrom, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure l is a sectional view of an apparatus embodying main features of my invention in application to a locomotiveboiler of the type Serial No. 628,659. (No model.)

Referring to the drawings, A is a reservoir or accumulator, which is suitably located about or above the boiler B, or the same may, if desired, be located in connection with a tender (not shown) to be connected with the locomotive, the accumulator being connected with the boiler or tender by pipes or tubes a, b, and 0. These pipes or tubes may be differently arranged, if desired, so as to correspond with any alteration with respect to position of the accumulatorA and are closed or opened by means of cocks a, b, or c. The pipe or tube 6 is led from the accumulator into the boiler B and below the water-level therein, while the tube or pipe c connects theaccumulator A with the dome O of the engine or with the steam-space of the boiler in its upper part thereof and the tube a of the accumulator A, with a pipe w, provided with a valve 3 with one of the injectors D. Of course it will be understood that my invention is not limited to the use of a single accumulator, as more than one may be employed with good results. The mode of operation of an apparatus of my invention is as follows: When the locomotive comes to a stop at a station or on a siding, the cook a is opened, so that the injector D may blow out any air in the accumulator A, or when the locomotive is in transit, in which only a certain amount of steam is required, the cook a is opened, so that steam may be conductedto the injector D by the pipes a and w and water forced or pumped into the boiler 13. The cock b is then gradually opened, so that water can pass from the boiler B to the reservoir or accumulator A, and when the steam has begun to issue from the injector D the cook a is closed again, as the air has by this time been removed from the accumulatorA. In this manner the steam in the accumulator A is utilized to fill the boiler B with water by means of the injector D and is not uselessly blown into the atmosphere. After sufficient water has been led from the boiler to the accumulator, the level of which can be observed by means of the water-gage d, the cock Z2 is then closed and the cock 0 is opened, so as to let steam into the accumulator A. The cock 0' remains open until the accumulator is emptied of its water into the boiler B. The locomotive in traveling up gradients or inclines, when the waterlevel in the boiler falls to the lowest limit the cock I) is opened until sufficient heated water passes from the accumulator A into the boiler to raise the water-level in the latter to the necessary height, and when the top of the gradient or incline has been reached the said water-level in the boiler will be kept at the height required by means of the injec- The tor after the cock I) has been closed. filling of the accumulator A with water is then effected as beforethat is, the cock 0 is shut ofi, the cock a is opened, and as soon as the steam begins to issue from the injector the cock a is closed and the cock I) is opened, and when there is sufficient Water in the accumulator A the cock I) is also closed and the cock 0 is opened. The steam passing from the pipe at can be used for feeding the boiler by means of the injector and also for heating the water in the tender.
From the foregoing description it will be evident that the apparatus not only supplies heated water when most required without undue expense with respect to the heating of the same up to a temperature corresponding to ordinary steam-pressure, but it also prevents waste of steam in the working of the injector to feed the boiler from the tender or other source. The volume of water in the accumulator represents the diiference between the highest and lowest limit of waterlevel in the boiler, and the effect of the accumulator is therefore to double the working power of the water.
