SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,999, dated November 2, 1897.
Application filed March 23, 1897. Serial No. 628,854. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known thatl, JOHN J. RYAN, a resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in churns, and more particularly to that class known as working-body churns, the object of the invention being to provide a churn of the class specified which shall be simple in construction, be capable of operation by either hand or foot power, which can be cheaply manufactured, which shall be ornamental in appearance, and which shall be effectual in all respects in the performance of its func tions.
A further object is to so construct and mount the body of a churn that it can be easily rocked and properly guided during its rocking movements.
lVith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereiuafterset forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved churn. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation.- Fig. 3 is a sectional view. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the body or receptacle. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a portion of the apparatus.
A represents a frame composed, preferably, of piping and comprising two inverted-U- shaped frames A A connected together by suitable bracing-bars, and the vertical members of frame A are connected bybar or rod 1, located nearthe lower ends of the frame.
Bars or castings 2 3 are disposed upon and secured to the respective frames A and A and said bars or castings 2 3 are provided centrally between their ends with integral vertical plates 4 5, each having an open slot 6 having cycloidal walls 7, and at the upper ends of the walls 7 lips 8 are formed to act as stops, as presently explained.
The vertical plates 4 5 are disposed in line with the outer edges of the bars or castings 2 3, so that the upper faces of the latter constitute trackw. ys or bearin gs 9 for the accommodation of rockers 1O 11, secured to the side faces of the churn-body B, the latter being 5 5 disposed between the two frames A A The rockers 10 11 are so curved that their ends may be disposed in line with the center of the churn-body and so that their centers shall be disposed below the center of said churn- 6o body.
The rockers 10 11 are made at their lower edges with flanges 12, which bear and rock upon the bars or castings 2 3, and the center of each rocker is provided with a guide-pin 13, which enters the slot 6 of the adjacent vertical plate 4 or 5. From this construction and arrangement of parts it will be seen that during the rocking operation of the churnbody the guide-pins will ride lightly upon the upper ends of the cycloidal walls 7 and thus arrest the movement of the churn-body.
An arm 14 is pivotally attached to one end of the bar or casting 8 and is made with two sockets 15 16, adapted to receive the toe 17 of rocker 11. ends with a rounded toe 17, and each toe of one rocker is made with a socket 18 for a purpose presently explained. The arm 14 constitutes a key for holding the churn-body fixed in different positions, the engagement of the socket 15 with the rocker serving to hold the churn-body horizontal to permit the insertion of cream or the removal of butter and the engagement of the socket 10 with the rocker acting to retain the churn-body in an 5 inclined position to allow drainage through a suitable outlet at 18.
The body or receptacle B. may be conveniently made of wood and elliptical in crosssection. receptacle will preferably be made straight, except at their ends, where they are beveled somewhat, as shown at 20, whereby to facilitate the application of the hoops or hands 21.

Brackets 24 are secured at each end of the body or receptacle B, in proximity to the outer edges thereof, and these brackets serve to support handles 25, whereby to operate the churn by hand.
It is also desirable to provide means whereby the churn can be operated by foot-power, and for this purpose the devices now to be described will be employed. The bar or casting 2 is provided at its center with a pin 26, on which the inner ends of two arms 27 27 are pivotally supported. To the outer ends of these arms rods 28 are loosely connected and depend therefrom to points near the base of the frame, where they are connected with treadles 29. Each treadle is provided at its, forward end with a hook 30, whereby it is pivotally supported on the bar 1. Short rods or links 31 are also pivotally connected to the arms 27 near their outer ends, and the upper ends of said rods or links are made with hooks 32, adapted to loosely enter the sockets 18 in the toe 17 at the ends of one of the rockers 1O 11. From this construction and arrangement of parts it is apparent that when the treadles are operated motion will be imparted to the body or receptacle B to rock the same on its bearings on the trackways 9 on the bars or castings 2 3, during which motion the cream will be thoroughly and violently agitated, and the process of churning will be quickly and effectually performed.
My improvements are simple in construction and efiectual in all respects in the per formance of their functions.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to limit my? self to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a frame and a churn-body, of rockers secured to the churnbody and adapted to rock on said frame, vertical plates having slots with cycloidal walls,
guide-pins on the churn-body to ride on the cycloidal walls,arms pivotally connected with the framework, links connecting said pivotal arms withthe ends of the rockers, treadles and rods connecting said pivoted arms with L the treadles, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a frame, and a churn-body adapted to rock on said frame, arms pivoted to the frame, treadles connected with the pivoted arms, and links connecting said arms with the churn-b0dy, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a frame,of a churn l body adapted to rock on the frame, and a pivoted arm or key having two sockets whereby to hold the churn-body in different positions,
substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a frame and a churn-body, of curved rocker-bars secured to the side faces of the churn-body, each curved rocker-bar having a pin at its center, said bars being so disposed that the pins will be below the center of the churn-body and below the ends of said rocker-bars, arms pivoted to the frame, treadles, rods connecting said treadles with said arms, and links connecting said arms with the ends of the rocker-bars on the churn-body, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with a frame and a churn-body, of bars or castings on the frame and having trackways, rockers secured to the churn-body and bearing on said trackways, vertical plates on said bars or castings, said vertical plates having slots with cycloidal walls, guide-pins on said rockers to ride on said cycloidal-walls, arms pivotally connected with the framework, links connecting said pivoted: arms with the ends of the rockers, treadles and rods connecting said pivoted arms with the treadles, substantially as set forth.
