COMBINATION PAIL-EAR AND SPRING-CATCH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,496, dated October 26, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

. Be it known that I, CLINTON W. BAKER, residing at Shamokin, in the county of Northtimberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Combination Pail-Ear and Spring-Catch, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates generally to an ear adapted to connect the bail to a pail or bucket, and is more especially adapted for use upon dinner-pails and the like.

The object of my invention is to provide a combination ear and fastener, said fastener being employed to secure the lid upon the top of the dinner pail or bucket.

Another object of my invention is to provide an automatic construction of fastener that is, one which will securely fasten the lid of a pail or bucket when set in place and one which can be released by simply turning down the bail connected to the said ear.

Another object of my invention is to provide an ear involving an automatic fastener, which fastener can be released upon the bail being turned in one direction and will not be effected when the bail is turned down in the opposite direction. 7

Another object is to provide an improved construction of ear which will be released when the bail is turned in either direction and which will serve to support the said bail in a most convenient position for lifting the same up.

Another object of my invention consists in providing a combination ear and lid-fastener which can be formed of a single piece of sheet metal and will he exceedingly cheap and durable and thoroughly efficient in all of its operations.

'With these various objects in view my invention consists, essentially, of an ear having a lower portion adapted for attachment to the side of the pail or bucket, an upper portion, to which the bail is attached, and a springfastener integral with the upper portion of the ear and arranged upon the inner side thereof, which springfastener is adapted to be acted upon by the loop or eye of the bail when the said bail is turned down.

My invention consists also in arranging perforations of the upper portion of the ear to one side of the spring-fastener, so that when the bail is turned in one direction it will opcrate upon the fastener, but will not operate thereon when turned in the opposite direction.

My invention consists also in providing perforations in both the upper portion of the ear and the fastener and through which the eye or loop of the bail is passed, so that the fastener will be operated when the bail is moved in either direction, and also by means of which the bail will be held in substantially a horizontal position when not in use.

My invention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings forminga part of this specification, Figure l is a view showing two pails provided with my improved construction of ears, one of the said pails having the top arranged thereon, while the other is shown with the top removed. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view showing a top. portion of the pail with the cover arranged thereon. Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view, the top being removed. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view showing the position of the bail when the fastener is not operated upon. Fig. 5 is a similarview showing the position of the bail when operating upon the fastener to release the same. Figs. 6 and 7 show detail perspective views in a slightly-modified form of construction.

In carrying out my inventionI employ any construction of pail or bucket A, which is provided with any construction of top or cover B. At each side of the pail or bucket is secured the ear 0, to which is connected the bail D, having the loops or eyes E at its ends.

Connected with the ears upon the inner sides are the spring-fasteners F, said springfasteners having an offset or shoulder G at their lower ends, which is adapted to spring over the outer edges of the cover or top and hold the same securely in place upon the bucket or pail. These spring-fasteners are so constructed and arranged that when the bail is elevated or used for carrying the pail the loop or eye will not contact with the said fastener, and the offset or shoulder will consequently overlap the edges of the cover or Y ward the ear proper and withdrawingthe ottset or shoulder from the edges of the top or cover, which top or cover can then be immediately removed.

fastener as composed of a single piece of spring sheet metal, and in practice I prefer to construct my improved device in this manner, the fastener being provided by simply bendingthe blank back upon itself, as shown at I; but it will of course be understood that the fastener can be made separate from the ear and attached thereto in any suitable manner. In Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4 I- have shown the ear proper provided with an oblique aperture K, through which the eye or loop of the bail is passed, and the fastener is arranged entirely to one side of the said opening perforations. By this construction it will be noticed that when the bail is thrown down in the direction of the arrow 'a the fastener will not be re leased; but when the bail i'sthrow n in the opposite directioi i, as indicated by the arrow b, the fastener will be operated u on by the bail and released.

' In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown both the ear I proper and the fastener as perforated, as shown K, and by this construction it wiil be noted that the fastener can be operated by I turning the bail down in either direction, and that when it is not desired to operate upon the tasten'eiwith the bail said bail can be dropped to a horizontal position and held there by the action of the s ring-fastener readyto be lifted o-r pressed down, "as desired.

In both forms or devices I prefer to make the ear with a lower portion adapted to be attached to the side of the bucket, which lower portion is bent ontwardly,as shown at M, and where the upper portion of the ear; joins the lower portion said upper portion is l also bent outwardly, as shown most clearly: at N the object of said outward bends being 1 to throw the upper portion of the ear and the sprihg 'f-asteher away from the 's-ide of the? bu'cket 'o-r pail, -so that the springfas'tener will be in proper position for acting upon the edges of the top or cover of the hook-ct or pail.

It will also be noticed that the device being constructed of a single piece of sheet metal will be exceedingly cheap and simple to manufacture and attach and will be highly efficient in the performance of all its intended functions.

Having thus described my invention, what I "claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i s I 1:.
