TOASTER.
' To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY P. KNoBLooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toasters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toasters, the object in view being to provide an exceedingly simple, cheap, and eflective device of the class referred to, upon which bread or like material may be placed and quickly and uniformly toasted, the toaster embodying a novel arrangement of flame distributing plate, whereby equal flame and heat is attained practically throughout the entire area of the toaster.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in connection with the frame of the toaster, a reversible holder, that is to say, a holder that may be turned over, so as to present either side to the toasting action of the flame, said holder being connected detachably and reversibly to the body or frame of the toaster.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is aplan View of a toaster, embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a cliametrical section through the same, taken in line with the handle thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view, showing the reversible holder applied to the body of the toaster. Fig. 4B is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of one of the holder hoops. Fig. 8 is a similar view of a portion of the other holder hoop. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the keeper.
The body of the toaster consists of a sheet metal rim 1 of any suitable width and cliameter, the same being provided along its bottom edge with a rolled bead 2 which acts to reinforce and strengthen the annular rim at such point. The annular rim 1 is easily made out of a straight flat strip of sheet metal, bent into annular form and overlapped and secured at the ends thereof by means of rivets 3, which also act as fasteners for securing the downwardly bent shank Specification of Letters Patent.

portion of a handle 5 extending radially outward from the rim, as shown.
Extending along the top edge of the rim 1 and entirely across the same, is a reticulatedfloor 6, composed by preference of expanded sheet metal, cut into the form of a disk and having the outer edge or margin thereof secured within a turned-over bead 7 formed at the top edge of the annular rim or body 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Beneath the reticulated floor 6 is arranged a dished concavo-oonvex flame distributing plate 8, the central portion 9 of which is preferably left imperforate, while around said imperforateportion the plate is provided with concentric series of perforations 10 and by reference to the drawings, it will be noted that these perforations progressively increase in size from the center outward toward the peripheral edge or margin of the floor 8, the object being to admit a smaller amount of flame or heat through the inner perforations and adapt the plate to act as a baffle for spreading the flame, and causing it to gradually find its way toward all of the annular series of openings, thereby eifecting an equal distribution of flame and heat throughout the entire area of the toaster.
Supported upon the body of the toaster is a holder, comprising two hoops 11 and 12, each of which is provided at one side with a radially extending handle 13, the said handles being clamped together by means of a sliding loop 1 1-, so as to hold between the two hoops any material placed in the holder. Each of the hoops is further provided with intersecting wires 15, extending substantially at right angles to each other, as shown in Fig. 3, and terminally connected to the hoop, so that the heat and flame may play upward through the meshes of the wires 15, and act upon the bread or other material placed between the two sections of the holder.
One of the hoops 11 is provided with a downwardly extending eye 16, while the other hoop is provided with a radially extending tongue 17 which passes through the eye 16 and has its end portion enlarged or expanded to form a head 18.
Connected to the rim or body 1 is a keeper, illustrated in detail in Fig. 7 and comprising a base portion 19 which is riveted or otherwise secured to the rim, an ofi'set 20,
and a bracket port-ion 21 which is provided with a. key-hole slot, embodying the larger circular portion 22, and the relatively narrow straight portion 23 which opens out at the extreme edge of the keeper. The key hole slot referred to is adapted to receive the tongue 17, as shown in Figs. 8 and 4, so that when the narrow portion 17 of the tongue lies in the larger opening 22, the holder may be lifted by means of the handles 15 and reverscd'or turned over. Fun thermore, the holder may be detached from the body of the toaster, by giving the holder approximately a quarter turn, thereby enabling the tongue to be drawn upward through the narrow portion or" the slot and out of engagement with the keeper. The holder may be connected again to the body of the toaster by reversing the operation just described.
The device as a whole, hereinabove described, is adapted for toasting bread or roasting meat, and for cooking various articles of diet, and is deubtlcssly susceptible to many other uses which will suggest themselves.
What is claimed is:
A toaster, comprising an annular rim, a flame distributing plate attached thereto and lying within the rim, a keeper extending upward from the rim and formed with a keyhole slot, and a reversible holder embodying two hoops, a laterally projecting eye on one hoop, and a radially projecting tongue on the other hoop passing through said eye and key-hole slot and having its extremity enlarged forming a retaining head which holds the hoops together and connects the holder with the keeper.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
