WILLIAM E. RoBERTs, OF BUTTE, MONTANA, ASSIGNOR-OF TWo-THRDs o JARED E. GAYLORD AND FRANOIS P. DAvIDsoN, OF SAMI] PLACE.
HEATING AND ROASTING FU RNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 592,220, dat'ed October 19, 1897.
Application filed May 29, 1891. Serial No. 638.762. (No model.)
To all whom 'it may sondern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. ROBERTS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Butte, in the county of Silver Bow and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating and Roasting Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to heating and roasting furnaces, and more particularly to the class of furnaces for calcining, `desulfurizing, or chloridizing ores, and is' designed as an improvement on the application filed by me December 28, 1895, Serial No. 573,587. object is to provide a furnace or. roastingoven, or a series of ovens located one above the other, each provided with a slot or opening extending throughout its side walls between the roof and hearth whereby the ends of a rake or stirring device adapted to travel over the hearths may project through said Slots or openings and passfrom one hearth to another, and means for-supporting and operating said shaft ends outside of the f urnacewalls upon a track-supported by brackets which carrythe hearths.
It consists in certain details of Construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more particularly described in the specification, llustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate like parts, Figure l is a vertical transv-erse section of my device, showing the hearths, sides, and roofs of the ovens and the brackets by which they are supported and carried and the entire vertical weight sustained. Fig. 2 is a side 'elevation of same, Fig. 3 is a modification in the form of bracket, showing a block or distan ce-piece interposed between the brackets. Figs. 4
and 5 are details showing forms of clip or 'clamp by which the brackets may be secured -to the Vertical beams which serve as lateral supports or buckstays.
Referring more specifically to the drawings by letter, A represents the arch or roof Its of the oven, B the floor or hearth, and O the side walls of the latter.
. D is a bracket adapted to carry two longi- 'tudinal I-beams EE', which carry and support, respectively, the arch A and the floor or hearth of the furnace and its sidewalls C. F representsa series of vertical beams or columns ranged along the sides of the furnace at a short distance from the side walls and against which the outer edge or base of the bracketsD bear.
The brackets may be secured to the fianges of the vertical beams bythe clips or clamps G, if desired, but this is not essential to enablethe brackets to, supportand Carry the hearths, roofs, and side walls of the ovens, and these vertical beams or columns serve merely as braces or buckstays to resist the lateral strain or side thrust of the roofs or arches. i
A hearth may be provided beneath the lowermost arch, as shown in the drawings, if desired, and it is obvious that this hearth need not be supported by brackets, as it may be built up directly from the ground.
.The foot of the lowermost bracket, which carries the firstfloor or hearth and its arch, rests upon a substantial foundation built up from the ground, and the foot of the bracket supporting and carrying the roof rests upon and is supported by the former. Therefore the entire vertical weight of the hearths, side walls, and roofs of the respective ovens is carried and supported from the ground by the brackets D, each of which supports and carries the one above, regardless of the vertical beams or columns which merely serve to receive the lateral or side thrust or pressure.
While I have described and shown vertical beams or columns ranged along the sides of the furnace, bearing against thebase or back of the brackets to serve as braces or buckstays and take the lateral thrust of the arches, it is obvious that these vertical columns may be entirely dispensed with, and other means that will serve this purpose may be employed.
IOO
port and carry the ends of the rake-shafts which project through the longitudinal openings or slots in the side walls of each oven, and are made to travel over the hearths of the respective ovens by suitable means located outside of the ovens.
XVhile I have shown the base of each braeket resting 011 the top of the one beneath, it is obvious that this Construction nay be varied by the use of an int'erposed block or distancepieee, as shown in Fig. 5, without departing froni the spirit of ny invention.
I represents a tie-red at the top of the vertical beans or colunns by which they are united on opposite side's of the furnace, and K represents a channel-bean seeured to the lower flange of the I-beam supporting the roof-arch and forming a part of the side of the oven.
Having th us described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A furnaee provided with longitudinal slots or openings extendin g entirely through its side walls from end to end, a plurality of braekets arranged in vertical series along the sides of the furnace the brackets of each series supported one upon another and carrying and supporting the hearth, roof and side walls, and means for taking the lateral strain of the arehes, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A furnace provided with longitudinal Slots extending throughout its side Walls, a plurality of braekets supported one upon another and earryin g and supporting the hearth, roof and side walls, means for naintaining said brackets against the lateral thrust ot' the arches, and a track upon said brackets, adapted to carry and support the ends of a rakeshaft, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
A furnace provided with lon gitudinal slots throughout its side walls, a plurality of brackets supported one upon another and carrying and supporting its side walls, hearth and root, means for maintaining said brackets against the lateral thrust of the arehes; tracks upon said brackets, and a rake-shaft passing through said slots in the side walls, and supported upon said traeks, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. A furnace provided with longitudinal slots through its side walls, a plurality of braekets supported one upon another and from end to end supporting and carrying the hearths, roofs, and side Walls, and vertical eolumns ranged along the sides of the furnaee and bearin g against the brackets, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A furnace provided with longitudinal slots throughout its side walls, brackets supporting and carrying its hearth, roof, and side walls, each bracket supported by the one beneath, a track upon said brackets, a rakeshaft passing through said slots in the side walls and supported upon said traeks, and vertical eolunns ranged along the side walls and hearing against said brackets, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
G. A series of furnaces or ovens located one above the other, each provided With 1ongitudinal slots throughout its side walls; brackets supporting and carrying their hearths, roofs and side walls, each braeket supported by the one beneath; tracks upon said brackets; a rake-shaft projccting through the Slots in the side walls and supported on said tracks; means for Operating said rake; and vertical colunns or buekstays rangcd along the sido walls and bearing against said braekets, substantally as and for the purpose set forth.
In testiinony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
