M M DBEM SADDLE CLAMP FOB. VELOGIPEDES.
No. 591,741. Patented Oct. 1Z 1897.
wmiQM UNITED STATES V PATENT OFFICE. L
MILLER M. DEEM, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALE TO P. & F. MANUFACTURING 00., OF SAME PLACE.
SADDLE-CLAMP FOR VELOCIPEDES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,741, dated October 12, 1897.
Application filed June 23, 1897. Serial No. 641,985. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MILLER M. DEEM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Readin g, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saddle-Clamps for Velocipedes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a.
simple and efiicient clamp for securing saddles to the seat-posts of bicycles in such manner that the saddle may be lowered close to the frame of the machine without interference between the clamp and the frame.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side view of part of a bicycle-frame, showing the manner of securing a saddle to the seat-post by means of my improved clamp. Fig. 2 is a top perspective View of the clamp with part of the saddle-springs and seat-post attached. Fig. 3 is an end View of the same, partly in section; and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view.
Referring to the drawings, A and B indicate the opposing sections or yoke-pieces of my improved clamp, which are adapted, when drawn together, to grip the horizontal arm 0 of the seat-post. The lower yoke-piece B consists of a central metal block or body portion 1, having a recess 2 formed upon its upper face to conform to the size and shape of the seat-post, and having upwardly-inclined ends which are longitudinally slotted, leaving bifurcated arms 3. The arms 3 are provided with rounded shoulders 4 at their outer extremities projecting substantially at right angles to their lower inclined faces 4, and recesses 5 are formed near the base of said inclined faces for the reception of the saddlesprings D. The body portion 1 may also have a screw-threaded opening 6 in its center for the reception of a headless set-screw, if such is found desirable, for centering and holding the clamp.
The upper yoke-piece A consists of a central body portion 6, of the same width as the yoke-piece B, and having its inner surface 7 recessed to conform in general outline to the surface of the seat-post, and a pair of downwardly-inclined threaded arms 8, which are adapted to pass between the bifurcations 3 of the lower yoke-piece. The body portion is preferably made shell-like, as shown in the drawings, so as to yield slightly under strain, and the recess may be provided with longitudinal ribs or serrations, as shown, to aiford a better gripping-surface upon the seat-post. Upon the arms 8 I provide a pair of perforated rectangular plates E, having longitudinal recesses 9, adapted to engage the shoulders 4, so as to prevent the plates from turning, and similar recesses 10, cooperating with the recesses 5 to grip the saddle-springs. A
pair of nuts 11 are placed upon the extremities of the threaded arms for the purpose of drawing the parts together.
The application of my improved clamp will be readily appreciated. The saddle-springs are placed in the appropriate recesses between the plates E and the lower yoke-piece, and the yoke-pieces are then slipped over the horizontal arm of the seat-post. By tighten ing the nuts the plates are forced toward the lower yoke-piece, thus gripping the saddlesprings, and the two yoke-pieces are drawn together and bind upon the seat-post. The nuts being upon the sides are easy of access, and, as shown in the drawings, the horizontal bar of the seat-post may be lowered very close to the frame, and the saddle being supported from the under side of the clamp may be brought closeto the seat-post.
It will be evident that my clamp may be reversed, so that what I have for convenience termed the lower yoke-piece may become the upper one, and vice versa; also, that changes in details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A bicycle-saddle clamp consisting of a lower yoke-piece having slotted ends, the
lower surfaces of which are upwardly in-v clined, an upper yoke-piece having downwardly inclined threaded arms passing through the slots in the ends, nuts upon said threaded arms, and plates intermediate the nuts and the lower yoke-piece, substantially as described.
2. A bicycle-saddle clamp consisting of a lower yoke-piece having upwardly-inclined slotted ends and having a shoulder and a recess upon the under side of each end, an upper yoke-piece having downwardly-inclined threaded arms passing through the slots in the ends and provided with nuts, and plates intermediate the nuts and the lower yokepiece, said plates each having a recess to engage the shoulder upon the yoke and a recess opposite the recess on the yoke, substantially 10 as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
