FRANK B. JONES, OF BESSEMER, MICHIGAN.
SNOW-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,278, dated October 5, 1897. Application fil d March 8, 1897. Serial No. 626,508. (No model.)
To (,tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK B. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bessemer, in the county of Gogebic and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snow Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view. Fig. 5 is a side elevation. Fig. 6 is a detail of the front portion of the machine, showing one of the auxiliary blades attached. Fig. 7 .is a detail view of one of the auxiliary blades. Figs. 8 and 9 are respectively a horizontal section and elevation of the devices for adjusting the rear wings vertically.
In the drawings, A represents the sled or main body of the device, which is provided at each side with a pair of runners o preferably formed of wood and faced with iron or steel runners a on the bottom. Each runner is provided with a depending portion to prevent the sled from moving laterally asit is drawn along. In this instance I have shown each runner provided on one of its sides with a plate a of iron or steel extending the whole length of the runner and extending below the bottom of the runner, as shown. I also provide each runner with a supplemental adj ustable runner consisting in this instance of a bar B, having a bottom plate b and side plates 1) 6, extending below the bottom of the runner.
Each of the runners B is connected to its adjacent runner a by means permitting vertical movement of the runners B-in this instance by parallel pivoted links Z) b B B represent hand-levers for adjusting the runners B B, each of said levers being pivoted to the sled A and to one-of the runners B.
The sled A is provided with an inclined frame (3, extending from the front upwardly toward the rear of the sled, and to this frame the handles D D are conveniently attached. These handles are each provided witha toothed bar d, adapted to be engaged by one of the hand-levers B B, to hold the adj ustable runners in any position to which they may be adjusted. By means of these vertically-adjustable runners the sled-body may be raised or lowered and tilted on one side or the other to conform to different surfaces, as desired.
Upon the inclined frame 0 is placed the inclined platform E, formed, preferably, of wood, having its forward portion covered with a plate 6, of sheet metal, the lower edge of which is provided with a knife E, bolted or otherwise secured thereto so as to be easily replaced when worn out. This knife preferably has its front edge bent into a horizontal plane and provided with projecting portions or teeth, as shown. The inclined frame is provided with an adjusting screw-shaft F, which engages nuts e e on the under side of the inclined platform, so that by turning said shaft the platform can be moved to bring the knife nearer to or farther from the ground. The shaft F is preferably provided with a crank f or hand-wheel to operate the same.
Upon the platform E is located the adj ustable plow G, consisting of a pair of plates g g, united at their front edges and diverging rearwardly and secured rigidly together iiiany desired way, as by braces g g. This plow is adapted to be placed in diiferent positions on the platform E, according to the character of workto be done. For ordinary Work the front edge of the plow is set centrally of the platform, as shown in Fig. 4c in full lines. For clearing the snow away from fences and other stationary objects the front edge is set at one side or the other, as shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 4:. In order to secure the plow in position, the front edge is preferably provided with a curved lug or projection giwhich is placed in one of several sockets or holes 6 in the platform E, adjacent to the knife E. Any number of these holes may be provided, but one at the center and one at each side will ordinarily be sullicient. The rear portions of the plow are held in position in this instance by standards A A, extending vertically from the sled A, as shown.
The rear portion of the sled is provided with a pair of pivotally-mounted adjustable wings II II, one on each side, which cooperate with the plow in pushing the snow to one side. Each of these wings is provided at its front edge with a pair of arms h h, having openings therein adapted to engage a vertical pivot rod or bolt k, secured to the sled A, adjacent to one of the standards A, or to the standard. Surrounding the said rod or bolt on the outside is a semicylindrical casing K, secured to said standard and provided with a vertical slot 7; on its rear side adjacent to the standard, said slot having horizontal slots opening into the main slot k at intervals, thereby forming a series of horizontal supporting-shoulders. By moving the wing H up close to the sled-body the arms 7L 7L are brought into line with the main slot 7c of the casing K, and said wing can then be adjusted vertically until said arms are opposite a pair of the slots le when by moving the wing outwardly it will be held in its adjusted position. Each wing 11 is provided with an adjustingrod 7L, pivotally connected thereto at one end and having at its other end a projection or in g to engage one of a series of holes in a bar A secured to the rear end of the sled A,as shown. The rear end of the sled between the bar A and the inclined frame 0 is preferably boarded over, as shown at A.
I also prefer to provide a pair of supplemental moldboards for use when desired when the device is used for removing snow from along fences, walls, and the like. Such a inoldboard L is shown in detail in Fig. 7 and is shown attached in Fig. 6. It consists ofa plate having its front edge curved to the right or left, according to the side on which it is to be used, and having its rear portion, which is preferably narrowed up, provided with bolt-holes, as shown. Each of the plates 9 g of the plow is provided with narrow slots 9 g to receive the bolts by which these moldboards are secured to and adjusted upon the plow G.
The snow-plow herein described may be pushed by hand or drawn by a team or otherwise and is adapted especially for removing snow from sidewalks, streets, and the like, although itmay be used for removing snow from other places whenever its construction makes its use convenient or desirable.
It will be observed that the knife and its inclined platform can be adjusted toward and from the ground without changing the angle which it makes with the ground.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a snow-plow the combination with the inclined platform provided at its lower end with a knife and a series of apertures extending transversely of the platform, of the plow provided at its front end with a projection for engaging said apertures, supports for the rear end of said plow and an adjusting device for moving said inclined platform toward and from the ground in the plane of said platform, substantially as described.
2. In a snow-plow the combination with the main body provided with runners, of the auxiliary movable runners and devices for adjusting said movable runners vertically, substantially as described.
3. In a snow-plow the combination with the main body provided with runners, of an auxiliary runner movably secured to each of said runners and independent adjusting devices for moving said movable runners vertically, substantially as described.
4. In a snow-plow the combination with the inclined platform, of a plow mounted thereon and vertically and laterally adj ustable wings secured to main body of the device adjacent to the rear of said plow, substantially as described.
5. In a snow-plow the combination with the inclined platform, of a plow mounted there on, laterally-movable wings pivotally connected to the main body adjacent to the rear end of the plow, independent devices for adjusting said wings vertically, independent devices for adjusting said wings laterally and means for adjusting said inclined platform, substantially as described.
6. I11 a snow-plow the combination with the inclined platform, of a plow mounted there- 011, means for adjusting the pointof said plow laterally on said platform and an auxiliary moldboard adapted to be detachably secured to said plow, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK l JONES.
