BYRON WALKER, OF C(EUR DALENE, IDAHO.
BICYCLE-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 591,066, dated October 5, 1897.
Application filed September 16, 1896. Serial No. 606,047. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BYRON H. WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Occur dAlene, in the county of Kootenai and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same This invention relates to improvements in bicycles, and has more particular relation to adjusted devices for the handle-bars of the same. I
The invention consists of certain novel details of construction, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the steering-head and handle-bars of a bicycle with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 represents a detail perspective view of the handlebar and its pendent stem. Fig. 4 represents a central vertical section through the locking-bolt, and Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of the key employed with this particular form of bolt.
A in the drawings represents the head of the bicycle, B the handle-bar, and O the sleeve for securing said handle-bar and head movably together. The handle-bar Bis provided with a hollow pendent stem 6, formed with an annular external flange b. The short sleeve 0 is provided with an annular contracted portion 0, forming a flange c, that is adapted to rest upon the top of the flange b.
The lower internal portion of this sleeve is screw-threaded, as at 0 to engage screwthreads formed upon the upper end of an auxiliary sleeve 0 said sleeve 0 in turn being provided with internal screw-threads c that are engagedby screw-threads a, formed upon the upper end of the head A. The said upper end of the head is formed with an angular socket a, preferably rectangular in cross-section. This socket is adapted to receive the vertically-sliding bolt D, mounted within the hollow stem 1). This bolt D comprises a head cl and a grooved stem cl, said stem being formed with a recess d near its upper end for permitting the movement of the long spring (1 mounted within the groove of said stem. This spring 01 is formed at its upper end with a head 0Z adapted to catch into notches 19 formed in the stem b. The said stem 1) is also provided with a keyhole 19 through which the key E is inserted to force the spring (i back and disengage its head d from the notch within which it is resting.
It will be observed from the above that when the head d of the boltD is in the socket a the handle-bar is locked readily to the head and is in operative position, but when the said bolt D is withdrawn up into the hollow stem there is no positive connection between the stem 1) and the head A and the handle-bars may beturned withoutin anywise turning said head.
WVhen it is desired to adjust the handlebar, the key is inserted into the hollow stem through the keyhole b andturned, pressing the spring 01 back and withdrawing its head (1 out of the notch 1) within which it is resting. At the same time the key engages the under side of the upper wall of the recess d and elevates the bolt, thus withdrawing its head D out of the socket a and permitting the stem to be turned into the desired position. When the bolt is elevated into the hollow stem, it is held in this position by the head of the spring engaging the upper notch or recess 6 WVhen it is again desired to fix the parts in operative position, the key is again inserted into the hollow stem and the bolt shot downward in substantially the same manner as in the upward movement.
By the use of my device a bicycle can be effectively locked by turning the bolt up The position of the handle-bar may also be adjusted to be conveniently operated by one hand alone, as in such cases where the other hand is being employed for carrying bundles and the like. It will also be observed that this adjustment of the handle-bar connection with the head cannot be effected except by the pressure of the key upon the particular lock employed on each bicycle. There is no likelihood of any of the parts becoming lost or mislaid, as with ordinary locks, as all of the devices form an integral part of the machine and cannot be detached therefrom except by a skilled mechanic.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isa 1. In a bicycle-lock, the combination with a handle-bar having a hollow pendent stem rotatably connected to the head, of a square sliding bolt mounted in said hollow stem and adapted to enter a square recess formed in the head to lock the parts together, and means for raising said bolt to disengage its squared end from the head and permit the handle-bar to rotate independently of said head, substantially as described.
2. In a bicyclelock, the combination with a handle-bar having a hollow pendent-stem rotatably connected to the head of the machine, of a sliding bolt so mounted within said hollow stem as to be incapable of rotation independently of the same and adapted to enter the head to hold said stem and head locked together, a headed locking-spring upon said bolt adapted to be held into or out of engagement with the stem, and a key for disengaging said locking-spring and raising or lowering the bolt, substantially as described.
3. In a bicycle-lock, the combination with a handle-bar having a hollow stem provided with an annular flange, of a screw-threaded sleeve adapted to rest upon said flange, a steering-head having a squared socket, an auxiliary sleeve connecting the flanged sleeve and said head, a squared bolt mounted within the hollow stem and adapted to engage the squared recess in the head, and a suitable key for raising or lowering said bolt, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BYRON II. WALKER.
