SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,033, dated October 5, 1897. Application nea June 9,1896. seria No. 594,851. (Numan.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN B. COLLINS, of Fulton, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in fans particularly applicable for Ventilating purposes, and has for its object the production of a device for controlling the operation of a fan which is compact, simple in construction, consists of a minimum number of parts, and is highly effective andv durable in use and to this end it consists, essentially, in the construction and arrangement of the parts for adjusting the fan-blades and controlling the operation of the means for revolving said blades, all as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts 4 in all the views.

A represents a revoluble supporting-frame, B fan-blades secured to said frame, and C an actuating part for adjusting the fan-blades.
' The frame A is driven by any suitable mechanism, and the operation of said mechanism is controlled by an actuating part ct of any suitable construction. The mechanism for driving the frame A preferably consists of a motor a', supported within a frame or casing A and having its armature iixed to the upper end of a revoluble upright shaft A2. A driver A3 encircles the shaft A2 and is formed with a conical face engaged with rollers A4, which revolve around a circular track A5, provided upon the frame or casing A. The
rollers A5 are suitably supported upon a head which is provided upon the upper endof a revoluble shaft A, journaled in the frame or casing A. The lower end of the shaft AG is suitably iixed to the revoluble supportingframe A. The motor a is electrically connected to a switch c2, which governs the passage of the current and is preferably provided with suitably-fixed terminals A7 and a movable member AS, carrying terminals movable into and out of contact with the former terminals, which are connected in circuit with one of the electric conductors or wires leading to said motor. usually actuated bya rocking lever A9, which is normally elevated by a suitable spring, Fig. l, and is provided with a ratchet or pawl for engaging ratchet -teeth upon said member.
A suitable connection A10 is secured to one end of the lever A9 and to a sleeve A, which encircles the shaft A6 and is movable lengthwise thereof. The lower end of said shaft is formed with a lengthwise chamber, and arranged in said chamber is a reciprocating rod having its upper end connected to substantially horizontal pins projecting into agroove in the inner face of the sleeve All. A spring A12 encircles thev reciprocating rod for normally elevating the same, and the lower end of said rod is connected to the actuating part a, which is preferably movable in a passage c, extending longitudinally through the actuating part C, presently described, and extends beneath said actuating part C for facilitating engagement therewith.
The revoluble frame A is provided with a central aperture a3, a guide a4, extending downwardly from the aperture, and substantially parallel bearings a5, extending from 0pposite sides of said aperture. The fan-blades are preferably disposed in substantially parallel planes, and their adjacent ends are provided with spindles or Shanks h, journaled in' the bearings a5. free extremities of the spindles or shanks b are provided with laterally-extending arms or projections h', arranged opposite to each other and formed with grooves h2, which are preferably formed rounding in cross-section and extend outwardlyfrom the axis of .said spindles or Shanks.
The actuating part C is arranged at substantially right angles with the fan-blades B and preferably consists of a hollow rod reciprocally movable in the guide a4. The arms or projections b', provided with the grooves b2, are yieldingly forced endwise toward said projection c' by springs b3,which also prevent rattling of the parts. These springs preferably encircle the spindles or shanks b and are interposed between shoulders b4 a, formed, respectively, upon said spindles or shanks and the frame A. The lower end of the actuating part is provided with a suitable handpiece b5, here shown as formed with an oil-receiving chamber h6 in its upper face. The actuating part C may be either held stationary or revolved by hand independently of the fanblades, is easily raised and lowered, and remains in its adj usted position. The raising and lowering of the actuating part actually rocks the fanblades and varies their inclination and operation without retarding the revolution of the frame A, and this result is effected with a minimum degree of friction and effort, owing to the construction and arrangement of the adjacent ends of the spindles or shanks b and the upper end of the actuating part.
The operation of my improved device for controlling the operation of a fan will be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, and it will be particularly noted that said device is compact, simple in construction, and consists of a minimum number of parts. It is obvious,'however, that the exact detail construction and arrangement of the parts of said device may be more or less varied without departing from the spirit of my invention, and hence I do not herein limit myself to such exact construction and arrangement.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of fan-blades having their adjacent ends provided with 'spindles or shanks formed with grooves extending outwardly from their axes, and a movable actuating part having engaging faces movable in said grooves, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of fan-blades having their adjacent ends provided with spindles or shanks formed with grooves extending outwardly from their axes, a movable actuating part having engaging faces movable in said grooves, said actuating part being revoluble independently of the fan-blades, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of fan-blades having their adjacent ends provided with spindles or shanks formed with grooves extending outwardly from their axes, and a movable actuating part provided with a substantially spherical projection movable in said grooves, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination of fan-blades having their adjacent ends provided with spindles or shanks formed with grooves extending outwardly from their axes, a movable actuating part having engaging faces movable in said grooves andl springs for forcing the spindles or shanks toward the actuating part, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The combination of a revoluble supporting-frame, fan-blades having their adjacent ends provided with spindles or shanks journaled in the supporting-frame, said spindles or shanks having their adjacent sides provided with laterally-extending arms or projections formed with grooves extending outwardly from the axes of the spindles or shanks, a movable actuating part having a substantially spherical projection movable in said grooves and springs for forcing the spindles or shanks toward the actuating part, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination of a revoluble supportingnframe, fan-blades having their adjacent ends provided with spindles or shanks journaled in the supporting-frame and formed with grooves extending outwardly from the axes, an actuating part reciprocally movable in the frame and revoluble independently of the fan-blades, said actuating part being provided with a substantially spherical projection movable in said grooves, substantially as and for the purpose described.
7. The combination of fan-blades having their adjacent ends provided with spindles or shanks formed with grooves extending outwardly from their axes, a movable actuating part having engaging faces movable in said grooves, for adjusting the fan-blades, said actuating part being provided with a lengthwise passage a switch for controlling the operation of the fan-blades and a second actuating part movable in the lengthwise passage and connected tothe switch, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
S. The combination of fan-blades having their adjacent ends formed with grooves extending outwardly from their axes, a movable actuating part having engaging faces movable in the grooves for adjusting the fanblades, said actuating part being provided with a lengthwise passage, means for actuating the fan-blades, and a second actuating part movable in the lengthwise passage for controlling the operation of said means, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
