Description

(No Model.)
C. SHUI-l. PBNeBePosT.
No. 590,914. Patented Sept. 28,1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SHUH, OF NEVBERRY, INDIANA.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.y 590,914, dated September 28, 1897. A Application filed July 1, 1897. Serial Nol 643,086. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES SHUH, of Newberry, in the county of Greene and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Fence-Post, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved fence-post which is simple and durable in constructionand arranged to be securely held in the ground and alsoarranged to prevent moisture from corroding or otherwise injuring the metallic foot of the standard.
The invention consists principally of a metallc standard having a twisted foot, a base formed of clay and provided with a central aperture for the reception of the twisted foot of the standard, and a cement for securing the said foot in the base. Y
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to vbe had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of the improvement on the .line l 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, and Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the standard.
The base A, made of clay or like material and properly burned, is formed on its outside with longitudinally-extending recesses A', so that when the base is placed in the ground the latter can be readily packed into the said recesses to hold the base securely in place.
The base A is provided with a central polygonal aperture into which extends the foot B of a metallic standard provided with a flange A B', resting on the top of the base A to close the upper end thereof, the said flange carrying an extension B2, to which the post is secured in the usual manner. The flange B' is provided with depending arms B3, clasping the outer faces of the base A at the upper ends of the recesses A', to securely and properly hold the foot B and the post in place on the base A. Thefoot B is twisted, as plainly indicated in Figs. l and 3, and the aperture in the base is filled withy a plastic binding material, such as cement C, to securely fasten the foot in place in thebase A when the said material dries and hardens. Now it will be seen that by having the' foot twisted it is securely fastened in position by the hardened cement, so that the post is not liable to become loose, and as the foot is entirely surrounded .by the cement no moisture whatever can get to the foot and corrode the same, as is so frequently the case in metallic fenceposts as heretofore constructed. The cement extends to the top of the base, so that the iiange B' rests partly on the base and on the cement to exclude moisture at this point.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A fence-post comprising a tubular base formed with recesses lon the outside, and a standard having a twisted foot extending into the said base, the standard being provided with a iange having arms engaging the face of the base at the said recesses, to securely hold the standard in place on the said base, substantially as shown and described.
2. A fence-post comprising a standard having a twisted foot and a iiange at`the upper end of the saidV foot, a base formed with a central aperture for the passage of the said foot, and a plastic materialA for filling the opening in the said base and for engaging the twists of the said foot, to lock the foot in i place, substantially as shown and described.
