Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
(WILLIAM REESE, or CARNEGIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 590,859, dated September 28, 1897.
Application filed March 19,1897. Serial No. 628,320. (No model-l of which the following is a full, clear, andexact description, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which L Figure 1 is a central longitudinal vertical section through a draw-head furnished with my improved locking device, the jaw being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View taken on the line II II of Fig. 1. is a plan View. Fig; 4 is a detail view in perspective of the tail of the locking-jaw in engagement with the locking-bar,
1 'My invention relates to the class of twinjaw couplers conforming. to the Master'Oar Builders standard, and has reference more particularly to the mechanism employed in locking and unlocking the tail of the swinging aw, the construction otherwise involving no change fromthe Well-known type of Jan-- a supporting-bolt 11, having abearingin the draw-head, and by which the bolt 9 is suspended in position. The bolt 9 is suspended within the draw-head so as to be capable of swinging backwardly in 'the'slot Sand of rising upon the pin 11, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1. At a point in the path of the tailpiece 4 the swinging jaw is beveled inwardly, as at 12, the extended end bcingcorrespondingly narrowed in width.
In the operation of closing the coupling the tailpiecev swings aroundin the direction of the arrow, as indicated in Fig. 4, and the rounded end striking'against the beveled fa ce ing it securely in position.
Fig. 3
'12 will tend to throw the bolt backwardly, the tailpiece then riding underneath and raising the bolt sufiicientlyfar to'all'ow the tailpiece to seat itself in'a closed position,.as indicated in Fig. 3, when the bolt will swing-forwardly across the end of the. tailpiece, thereby look- For the purpose of more securely retaining it in such locking position the preponderance of weight in the back of the bolt 9 acts to force the belt forwardly into position, as shown.
\Vhen it is desired to release the bolt from engagement with the tail-piece, it is drawn,
by means of a chain or lever secured to the link 13, upwardly and forwardly, raising the. beveled edge 12 above the tailpiece and throwing the lower end back from engagement therewith, thereby releasing the knuckle, when it may be opened, as in the act of uncoupling or in setting it ready for operation.
I am aware that couplers have been constructed provided with. pivoted latches designed to engage the tailpiece of the knuckle,
.but I believe I am the first to construct a locking-bar and mount it within the drawhead in the manner in which I have described. 7
My device is very simple and reliable in its operation, cheap and effective in its'construetion, not liable to get out of order, and is easily operated from the outside without dangerof injury.
Having described my invention, what -I claim is-'- 1. A car-couplerhaving a swinging jaw provided with an extended tailpiece rounded on its outer end,a locking-bolt vertically mounted in the path of the swinging tailpiece, longitudinal upper and lower slots in the drawhead with clearance for movement of the locking-bolt, a transverse elongated slot through the locking-bolt, a supporting-pin passing through the slot and .the draw-head, and an inwardly downwardly beveled shoulder on the front face of the lockingbol-t, substantially as set forth. 1
2. In a car-coupler provided with a swinging jaw having an extended tailpiece rounded on its outer end; a vertical locking-bolt located in the pat-h of the tailpiece mounted in a longitudinal slot through the upper and lower sides of the draw-head the lower slotbeing lengthened for clearance, provided with a transverse elongated slot, a supportingpin passing through the slot and the drawhead, and an inwardly-beveled shoulder on the front face of the locking-bolt, substantially as set forth.
3. In a car-coupler provided with a swinging jaw having an extended tailpiece rounded on its outer end; a vertical locking-bolt located in the path of the tailpiece mounted in a longitudinal slot through the upper and lower sides of the draw-head, the lower slot being lengthened for clearance, provided for raising and tippingbaekwardly the locking-bolt, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of January, 1897.
