No. 590,235. P tented Sept. 21,1897.
U'NrTnn STATES iaTnNT @Trina OLOF VILLIAM ORELL, OF ST. LOUIS PARK, MINNESOTA.
RUB-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,235, dated September 21, 1897. Applieatiouiiled February `1, 1897. Serial No. 621,559. (No model.)
To all w/wm t may concer/1,:
Be it known that I, OLoF WILLIAM ORELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis Park, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented 'certain new and useful Improvements in Rub- Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to rub-irons adapted for use in connection with whifliietrees` for preventin g injury to the latter when striking the wheel of a vehicle; and its objectv is to provide an improved construct-ion of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect. to efficiency in use.
The invention consists, essentially, in a spring-metal plat-e provided at each end with an outwardly-extending lug formed with a semicylindrical recess at each end, a hole for the passage of a screw, and a recess in the inner side, in combination with a roller having a journal at each end fitting in said last-nam ed recesses, and said roller being sprung into place and held in position by the resiliency of said plate, as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation of one end of a whililetree, show- `ing my improved rub-iron secured thereto.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the plate detached from the whiiiletree and the roller removed. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the plate.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral l designates a whiftletree of any ordinary or suitable construction, cutaway at 2 near one end, forming a curved surface.
' The numeral 3 designates a spring-metal plate having formed integral therewith at each end a curved or beveled lug 4, projecting outwardly from said plate and formed with screw-holes 5. Theinner adjoining sides of said lugs are formed with recesses 6 to receive the journals of a roller, hereinafter described. The under sides of said plates or and is formed with two holes 3 to receive setscrews 3b.
The numeral 8 designates a roller formed with a stud or journal 9 at each end, which iits in the recesses 6. The said roller is connected with the recesses 6 by bending the-plate l backward'sufiiciently to allow the studs 9 to pass the lugs when the plate is let go, springing back into normal position, when the studs will enter the recesses and the roller beheld in place by the resiliency of the plate.
The device is secured to the whiflietree by means of screws 10, the Hat under side seating on the cu t-away portion of the whiftletree and the semicylindrical ends fitting on the curved portion.
In use when the traces become slack or in turning the roller will strike the wheel, instead of the whiflietree doing so, as is ordinarily the case, and injury to the whiflietree by rubbing or striking the wheel is obviated.
In case the journal G should wear so as to work too loose in the recesses in the lugs, by loosening the screws 5 at the ends of the plate and tightening the screws 3b at the center'the central portion of the plate will be depressed, drawing the lugs inward, so as to take up the wear of the lugs and prevent rattling.
j Having thus described my invention, what I claim is i l. In a rub-iron for whiffietrees, the combination `with the flat spring-metal plate having semicylindrical recesses at each end on the under side, the lugs formed with screwholes and with recesses in the inner sides, of the roller, having a journal or stud at each end sprung into place and held in position by the resiliency of the said plate, substantially as described. Y
2. The combination with a whiftletree provided near the end with a curved recess, of the spring-metal-plate, iaton its inner side and formed with semicylindrical recesses at the ends and tapering on its upper side, the my own I have hereunto afxed my signature lugs formed with recesses at the inner sides, in presence of two Witnesses.
the roller having zt lug tt each end journaled 1 y in said recesses, the screws at the ends of said GLOB VILLIAM ORELL' plate and the set-screws at the center thereof, Vitnesses: substantially as and for the purpose specified. C. J. XVENNBERG,
In testimony that I claim theforegoing as A. MORGAN.
