Description

(No Model.)
M. 13. TYNES. BRAIDING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING MACHINES.
Patented Sept. 7,1897.
At tOTn ey.
UNITED STATES MINOR EUGENE TYNES, OF DALLAS, TEXAS.
BRAIDING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWINGMACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,764, dated September 7, 1897.
Application filed January 15, 1897. Serial No. 619,334. (No model 3 To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, hIINOR EUGENE Truss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Braiding Attachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for sewing-machines, and particularly to a device to be attached to the pressure-foot for the purpose of carrying a tinsel or braid in outlining figures upon cloth or other material.
The object of the invention is to provide an attachment for the pressure-foot of sewingmachines to carry a tinsel or bra-id in proper position relative to the needle and insure such tinsel or braid being engaged by every stroke of the needle.
Other objects and advantages accruing from the special construction of the device will be hereinafter more fully disclosed in the specification and claims to follow.
The invention consists of the novel construction and peculiar form of the device as depicted in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a design in preparation with my device attached to the prossure-foot and carrying a tinsel. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section of my attachment. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inverted perspective view of my device. Fig. 4, is amodification. Fig. 5 is a further modification.
In carrying my invention into effect the desired figure to be tinseled or braided is mapped out upon the piece of cloth or other material, and the latter is placed in proper position under the presser-foot having my invention applied and carrying the tinsel or braid.
The attachment consists of a sheet metal, preferably of tin-plate, folded upon itself to form a longitudinal opening 1, the metal at one end of the opening being pressed or bent together at 2 upon each side to form a contracted month 3. The attachment is placed upon the resser-foot at, with the latter extending well into the said opening 1, so as to leave only a suflicient passage between the end of the attachment and the presser-foot fork for the needle. The tinsel or braid 5 is run through said opening 1 between the presser-foot forks and thus prevented from misplacement, while the mouth 3 confines the tinsel to the center of the opening that it may be guided directly and accurately.
The attachment covering the forks of the presser-foot completely prevents the braid, tinsel, or other part of the work from interfering with the fork or needle.
Referring to the modification shown in Fig. 4, the outer fold of the plate is bent back upon itself to form a separate braid-guide groove or passage 6 upon the top side of the presser-foot openin g 7 both ends of the latter being left entirely open.
In Fig. 5 is sh own an attachment with a contracted mouth 8 upon the bottom for a braidpassage and a top close curl 9 for a finer braid or tinsel, so that tinsels and braids of radi cally different sizes may be carried the smaller in the curl-passage and the larger in the bottom opening and mouth.
It is obvious that the metals of which these attachments are composed may be bent to fit pressure-feet of different sizes.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the material of which the attachment is composed, nor to the particular size or dimensions of the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A braiding attachment for the presserfoot of a sewing-machine, comprising a flattened tube open at both ends, one of said ends having a contracted opening the walls of which taper into the body of the tube, as set forth.
2. A braiding attachment for the presserfoot of a sewingmachine, comprising a fiattened tube open at both ends, one of said ends having a contracted opening the walls of which taper into the body of the tube, 011 the lower side, and a tubular passage on the upper side open at both ends, as set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
MINOR EUGENE TYNES.
