Description
FFICEE PATENT JACOB M. HESS, OF MGKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
TU RN-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,724, dated September 7, 1897.
Application filed March 16, 1897.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JACOB M. HESS, a citizen of the United States, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turn-Tables; and I do declare the following to he afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to railroad turn-tables particularly design ed for use in rouudhouses; and the object of the invention is to provide simple, strong, and effective mechanism for operating said turn-table With this object in view the invention con sists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of my improved turntable; and Fig. 2 isavertical central section on line 00 m, Fig. 1.
In the drawings,1 denotes a turn-table which may he of any well-known or suitabl'e'con struction, being provided with the two sets of crossing tracks The turn-table is supported upon the circular track by supporting-wheels 4, and has on its under side a circular rack-wheel 5.
6 denotes a dovetailed groove slide-rest, which is supported adjacent to the turn-table, and 7 denotes the slide adapted to dovetail in said rest and provided with rack-teeth 8, which mesh with the circular rack on the bottom of the table. By reciprocating this rack it is evident that the turn-table will he ro- Serial No. 627,784. (No modeL) tated according to the direction of movement of the rack.
An y well-known or approved means may be employed for reciprocating the slide, but I prefer compressed air or hydraulic power. I From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of the invention will be understood without requiring further explanation.
It will be seen that the device is exceedingly simple and may be produced at small cost.
It is further obvious that the present turntables may be rigged with my improvement by simply attaching to the under sides thereof the circular rack and mounting the racked slide adjacent thereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described turn-table, comprising the rotatable table 1, having the rackwheel 5, secured to the under side thereof, the racleslide '7, meshing with the teeth of the raclcwheel and connected by a dovetail to the support 6, in combination with the circular track 3, having the supporting-wheels 4, journaled therein and the table resting on said wheels, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB M. HESS.
